The National Portrait Gallery will be opening its doors shortly for the BP Portrait Awards 2012. The exhibition is a rare opportunity to see some of the best contemporary portrait paintings from all over the world.

Opening on the 21st June and running through until the 23rd September 2012, the BP Portrait Award 2012 exhibition will pack the walls of the National Portrait Gallery with a large array of differing styles of portrait painting.

Expect to see random faces of artists’ friends, family and loved ones alongside some more well known mugs. You should probably also prepare yourself to see portraits of people with clothes off as well as clothes on (as I did from the warmth of my desk in work, only to find a couple of nudes in amongst the shortlisted artists).

Only fifty five works have been chosen out of a pretty sizable 2,187 contenders, so hopefully that means there’s going to be a lot of brilliance involved. The four shortlisted artists are Aleah Chapin for Auntie, Alan Coulson for Richie Culver, Ignacio Estudillo for El abuelo (Agustín Estudillo) and Jamie Routley for Tony Lewis.

One of these will go on to win the overall BP Portrait Awards 2012, with the prizewinner announcements taking place at the awards ceremony on the 19th June 2012.
