Here Comes the Boom DVD review

Here Comes The BoomIf you’re a fan of either King of Queens, Rocky movies, UFC or Salma Hayek then the Here Comes the Boom DVD will probably be as much of a hit with you as it was with us. Though we only had three out of the four, we couldn’t help but be impressed with the funny, feel good comedy, plus we’re a little less ambivalent to UFC now too.

Starring Happy Days legend, Henry Winkler, alongside Hayek and Kevin James, it’s a fun filled comedy that’s got long term appeal.

James plays lazy secondary school biology teacher, Scott Voss, who coasts along on the former glory of his past successes as a former college wrestler and the teacher of the year award he won eight years ago. However, his more recent laziness means that his attempts to get anywhere with school nurse hottie, Bella (Hayek), fail abysmally. That is until he manages to get her attention slightly as he sticks up for Marty (Winkler), Wilkinson High School’s music teacher, when it’s announced that the entire music department is getting its funding cut.

Voss vows to raise the $48, 000 that the school needs to keep the music department up and running, but when his attempts at community college extra hours turn out to be unsuccessful he turns to the world of ultimate fighting to earn the cash paid to losers. The stakes don’t stay so simple though as desperation pushes him into going for the wins. Cue training montages, great support from Winkler and Hayek, who are both drawn into the cage fighting melee.

James is convincing, silly and not too over the top, which makes the movie all the more effective. Winkler plays the lovably well wishing, but slightly bungling music teacher very well considering how infinitely cool he used to be and Salma Hayek is perfect as the tough to crack love conker of the film.

The fight scenes look fairly believable too with some epic moves and what looks like a genuinely gruelling battle for Voss throughout the course of the movie.

The biggest extra on the DVD is the addition of seventeen deleted scenes, but there’s also a blooper feature and a closer look at the cast from the film.

Here Comes the Boom is a good DVD that’ll be a good watch for years to come. There are no pretensions with the film, so it’s pretty much what it says on the tin. If you watch it and you ‘re surprised that there’s a little boom in there then you’ve probably missed the point.
