Humans Series 3 – airing in 2018 on Channel 4

Humans Series 3 Channel 4If you’ve enjoyed the opening two seasons of the show, the good news is that Channel 4, AMC Studios and Kudos have confirmed that Human Series 3 has been commissioned, bringing us yet more robotic drama to look forward to. It’s fast turning into an ongoing series and with the wide ranging critical acclaim and significant viewing figures for the previous outings, we’re expecting the third season to be just as well received.

Air date

There’s no word as of yet on the specific air date, but filming got underway in September 2017, and Channel 4 has gone on to confirm that the show will be back on TV in 2018. It will be another set of eight new episodes, which will each be around 46-minutes long, so there’s going to be a lot more drama and thrills in the third series.

Series 2 was initially announced in July 2015, before going on to get an air date for episode 1 on the 30th October 2016, so there was more than a year between commission and transmission. That appears to be the case again for season 3, so we could be looking at June 2018 before we get to see the next installment of the show.

That does, however, give anyone that missed either of the first two series a chance to catch up with the story, so if you’ve been meaning to get into the show, now could be a good time to check it out. You can read our Humans Series 2 review to find out a little more, and you can also still watch all of the previous episodes on All 4, so it should be relatively easy to catch on the latest from the thrilling robo-drama.

Story

The story will pick up from the exciting climax to the second series, following the conscious synth robots and their surrogate family, The Hawkins. With the impact of the consciousness programme growing even further, it’s clear that the situation is poised on the brink of massive repercussions as society faces the reality of machines with feelings. Having already reacted pretty badly to it in the opening two series, it looks like there’s going to be yet more push back from the agencies and companies with a vested interest in the technology.

While a tenuous peace will be established in season 3, there will be infighting between the conscious synths, so it’s going to be a pretty complex plot once again. The moral questions of the show continue, but with more wide-reaching implications as the situation has become a global dilemma with a new mechanical species to adjust to.

Cast

Key members of the cast will be returning to continue the story, with Gemma Chan (Transformers: The Last Knight) as Mia, Emily Berrington (The Inbetweeners 2) as Niska, Ruth Bradley (Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams) as Karen, Colin Morgan (Merlin) as Leo and Ivanno Jeremiah (Doctor Who Series 10) as Max, making up the main synths in the series. The Hawkins family will be made up of Katherine Parkinson (The IT Crowd) as mum Laura, Tom Goodman-Hill (Mr Selfridge) as dad Joe, Lucy Carless as elder daughter Mattie, Theo Stevenson as son Toby and Pixie Davis (Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children) as younger daughter Sophie.

As was the case with Series 2, we’ll be getting a host of new faces, both human and robot, joining the cast and building out the alternate reality plot. The first new cast member to be announced is Mark Bonnar, who you might recognise as Fran’s husband Chris from Channel 4 sitcom, Catastrophe.

Production

Kudos began filming the third series in September 2017, which will see it completing the production for the 2018 air date. Humans Series 3 has once again been written by Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley, who have both penned all of the previous sixteen episodes.

It’s based on the Swedish sci-fi drama Real Humans, created by Lars Lundstrom and produced by SVT and Matador Film, which kicked it all off when it first aired in 2012. Talking about the next series, Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley said, “We’re thrilled to be continuing this story! The Humans audience will know that the end of series 2 changed everything. We can’t wait to bring this new world to life.” You can follow more from the production on the official Facebook page.

First impressions

We can’t wait to see what happens next to the characters when the show returns, and we’ll be updating with more details on the air date and additional cast members as it becomes available. The first two seasons have both been impressive, so Humans Series 3 should build on this with yet more sci-fi genius.
