Red Dwarf Series 10

Red Dwarf X review

The rumours about Red Dwarf Series 10 had been doing the rounds since April 2011, but the confirmation didn’t come until July in the same year, keeping us all on our sci-fi comedy-loving toes for a few months. Red Dwarf was a classic, and there are many, including Craig Charles, that are worried that messing with it could ruin the legacy, but we think you can’t rubbish class, and the arrival of X was met with the same level of kne rubbing enthusiasm had it be accompanied by two more Xs and bequeathed an 18 Certificate.

Following the 2008 mini-series Back to Earth, there hasn’t been much in the way of big news for the show, but that changed with the Series 10 release date confirmed as the Thursday 4th October 2012 on Dave as a six parter by the official Red Dwarf website. It was also confirmed that Rimmer, Lister, Cat and Kryten would all be back with the same actors as before – as if they could ever replace any of them. However, the big change Was that the episodes were changed to thirty minutes for Series X, instead of the old twenty three in the previous outings.

Shooting took place during the back end of 2011, which originally pushed back the release date to September 2012, but it went on to be confirmed to air in October, which was good news even if it was a little later than expected. Red Dwarf Series 10 aired on Dave, which has commissioned the show for it’s 2012 autumn launches.

Sadly, a return for Holly didn’t come to pass, but one constant will be the influence of series co-creator, Doug Naylor, who developed the show with Rob Grant for it’s first broadcast back in 1988. A lot of the action was filmed in front of a live studio audiences and the same brilliant old school model effects were back in play for the tenth outing for the Dwarfers.

Dave did a pretty good job with the finer details and giving Series 10 the budget to stack up to the previous outings for the sci-fi comedy. They stumped up pretty big, and the result was a whole lot of fun and yet more crazy situations for the crew of the Red Dwarf to face, including a jaunt to ancient Britain, the creation of a new lethally logical robot called Pree and a groinal exploder.

If for some reason you haven’t seen any of the series yet, Dave released a teaser Red Dwarf Series 10 trailer some time ago, which should give you an idea of what to expect. You can also read our review of the series to find out where you should pitch your expectations.
