Super Mario Odyssey UK release date, trailer and gameplay details

Super Mario Odyssey trailerMario will be taking his first big city steps on the Nintendo Switch with Super Mario Odyssey in autumn 2017 and from the look of what was on show at the Nintendo Presentation for the new console, and the trailer at E3, it could well be amazing. With more than a few new features it’s one of this year’s most exciting upcoming games. You can check out the trailer below to see it in action, along with a gameplay demo from the Nintendo Treehouse at E3.

It’s one of a few big releases planned for the Nintendo Switch, which includes The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild and Splatoon 2. We initially expected to be most excited by the prospect of the Zelda game, but with the arrival of the Super Mario Odyssey trailer it’s a close call between the two.

UK release date

The next big adventure for the New York plumber will be making its way to the Nintendo Switch before the end of the year with a UK release date planned for the 27th October 2017. This essentially means that you’ll have to wait until the Autumn leaves start to fall before getting your hands on what’s looking like it may well be the greatest platform game ever created.

It’s no longer the only Switch game scheduled for the 2017 Christmas period, as a few more titles will be out around the same time as Super Mario Odyssey thanks to a little third party support to add to Nintendo’s might. The biggest is Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which will be out a month earlier, but there’s also Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Fire Emblem Warriors, Pokkén Tournament DX, Rocket League, Sonic Forces, FIFA 18, and Yooka-Laylee.

Gameplay

The game is an open world, sandbox-style platformer that’s reminiscent of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, but with next gen graphics that look incredible. The environments look pretty big, especially the huge cityscape of New Donk City, which you can see the little plumber running around in the trailer and the gameplay demo below. It may not be 100% the case, but this feels a lot like Mario meets Lego City Undercover and with the genius of Nintendo’s gameplay gurus behind it, it should be a blast to play.

If that isn’t enough excitement, Mario’s hat comes to life in the game too and we can’t wait to get to take him on a jaunt around that incredible city level. If you throw your cap at the right object then you sort of possess is in a weird way to use it to do certain things in the game, whether its a street pole to fire you into the air, or a rocket to shoot you up to one of the cloud playgrounds that crop up in the game.

Graphics

This is easily going to be the best looking Mario game in the history of the series, with big, beautiful worlds, great proportions that live up to the wonder of both Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine and super slick animation that will take the platform genre to the peak of its capabilities.

First impressions

It’s shaping up to be a big year for Nintendo and Super Mario Odyssey is going to be a huge part of its success, building on the solid foundations created by the genius of The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild. All of the gameplay action and trailers that we’ve seen are jaw dropping both in terms of scale, graphics and gameplay action and with computer gaming’s most loved characters behind it, it’s sure to be a real joy to play.
