The Guard (2011) film news, release date & trailer

The GuardIf you’ve seen In Bruges then you’re probably familiar with the effortless acting style of Brendan Gleeson. In his latest film, The Guard, he’s about to take the lead role in the highly anticipated Irish action comedy alongside Don Cheadle (Iron Man 2).

Playing dim witted, never really grown up Irish policeman, Sergeant Gerry Boyle, Gleeson is about to take a step up in the weight divisions. When Boyle gets landed with the prospect of taking on an international drugs smuggling ring, he’s forced to work with by-the-book FBI agent Wendell Everett (Cheadle) to bring justice back to Irish soil.

Don Cheadle is also one of the film’s executive producers, continuing his move to work behind the camera as well as in front of it. He’s got a similar tie to the Marching Powder film that’s currently being worked on.

Out on the 8th July 2011, The Guard looks set to be a pretty decent prospect. The film trailer looks funny with elements of Will Ferrel, John C. Reilly, Seth Rogan & Danny McBride-like humour combined with In Bruges style criminal action scenes. Filmed in Ireland, it’s got a real life feel to it with semi-surreal, larger than life characterisation.

With a conclusively positive reception at the Sundance Film Festival it’s hard to see The Guard not being one of 2011’s breakthrough hits. It’s also got some great supporting actors, including Dominique McElligott and Sarah Greene.
