The RSC takes Julius Caesar to Africa at the Noel Coward Theatre

Julius CaesarThe Royal Shakespeare Company is about to give Julius Caesar an African reinvention for summer 2012. Opening at Stratford-Upon-Haven this week (28th May 2012) the new production is set to transfer to The Noel Coward Theatre from the 8th August 2012.

To celebrate the opening, the RSC has released the trailer below to give a snapshot or two of what the new production will be like. Set in modern day Africa, the play brings the struggle for democracy whirling from the past to the present with the inevitable political violence that is synonymous with Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar.

Julius Caesar, at the Noel Coward Theatre trailer:

The production will feature a highly regarded cast that includes Ray Fearon as Mark Anthony, Paterson Joseph as Brutas, Jeffery Kissoon as Julius Caeser and Cyril Nri as Cassius.

With the Arab Spring of last year and the ongoing struggle for democracy in many countries in Africa, the new production makes the age old story of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar as current and topical as it could be. With designs on being a fast moving thriller, it should be an interesting take on a classic.

Julius Caesar will also be playing at Newcastle’s Theatre Royal before it heads down to the West End for the Noel Coward theatre performances.

Julius Caesar performance dates:

Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford upon Avon
28 May – 7 July

Theatre Royal, Newcastle upon Tyne
19 – 28 July

Noel Coward Theatre, London
8 August – 15 September

Tickets to see Julius Caesar at The Noel Coward Theatre were available from the box office on 0844 482 5115.
