RoboCop (2014) DVD release details

RoboCop (2014) DVD starring Joel Kinnaman as Alex Murphy/RoboCopWhen a cult classic gets remade into a modern day blockbuster it’s almost always doomed to fail to live up to the standards of its predecessor, but that doesn’t always stop them from having any potential to impress, as is the case with the upcoming release of the RoboCop (2014) DVD. It may not be the gory shootathon that fans of the original will have been hoping for, but it does play on the sci-fi angle a little more, updating the style of the franchise with some impressive tech and high octane action.

Set for release on DVD, Blu-ray and digital download on the 9th June 2014, it brings Alex Murphy and his mecha-transformed new self, RoboCop, to a home entertainment device near you. The big difference this time around though, apart from the updated visuals, is that he’ll be sporting pretty cool black armour for parts of film, as well as the traditional silver finish that was made famous by Peter Weller in the 1987 original.

The storyline for the film has distinct similarities with its namesake, but rebooting it slightly with a bit more sanitised polish and sheen. Joel Kinnaman (Child 44) plays Alex Murphy this time around as he tries to police a lawless city in 2028. When he’s cut down by a car bomb by the city’s underground criminal connections within his own department, he’s strapped in steel and connected to a digital cortex by his supervisors to keep him alive, becoming RoboCop in the process.

If all of that isn’t enough, Kinnaman has also got Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton and Gary Oldman to star alongside, bringing a little more seasoned acting might to the movie. Oldman plays Dr. Dennett Norton, the scientist brainchild behind the RoboCop technology, with Keaton as OmniCorp CEO Raymond Sellars, who provides the backing for the experimental procedure, and Jackson plays Patrick Novak, a television show host, who’s recruited by Sellars to put a positive spin on the combination of man and machine.

The cast also includes a return to the screen for Abbie Cornish, who you might remember as Sweat Pea in the 2011 fantasy action flick, Sucker Punch. Here she plays Alex Murphy’s wife, Clara, who struggles to come to terms with the reality of her husband’s near death and subsequent reincarnation as the mechanised enforcer.

In terms of extra features, the RoboCop (2014) DVD comes with a large number of deleted scenes, a series of features on the OmniCorp technology of the future and the The Illusion Of Free Will, To Serve And Protect and The Robocop Suit featurette to give us a little more insight behind the thinking of the movie.
