What will be the next Lego game

If you played and loved Lego Star Wars The Skywalker Saga as much as we did then you might be wondering what will be the next Lego game. There is no simple answer to this for the next game from the brick-builder team, but we’re pretty sure that something will be taking shape somewhere.

We recently had the Lego Fortnite add-on, which is a survival action adventure game with similarities to Minecraft, but it’s far from the big-name story-based franchise that everyone is hoping for next. You can see some of the building fun in the video below, if you haven’t played it yet, and it follows another smaller game from the franchise, Lego 2K Drive, which came out on May 19th, 2023. This was a week after The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, so it struggled for traction against what was for us the game of the year in 2023.

While these are fun titles to play, you probably want to know what will be the next game following up on the style of The Skywalker Saga, which came out in 2022. Nothing has been announced as of yet, but we’ll take you through the main contenders in the sections below and give you our take on which one is most likely/the best option.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Lego was putting out a new game in the series most years. There was The Lego Movie 2 Videogame in 2019, DC Supervillains and The Incredibles in 2018, and then the Ninjango Movie game and Marvel Super Heroes 2 in 2017, but since then we’ve only had the Star Wars Saga.

Clearly it’s taking the development studios a little time to get back up to speed, but it’s also possible that they’re pacing things out a little more to give projects more potential impact. We know that Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga was hugely popular, so there’s clearly a big appetite for the next game, so hopefully we’ll get an announcement sometime soon.

Historically, big Lego games have been announced around June, tying in with E3, but with the gaming event fading out in recent years, it could come at any time. There are big Nintendo Directs and PlayStation events to announce alongside through out the year, so we’ll keep you updated here as things develop. For now, here are the main contenders.

The next Lego game will be Marvel

It’s fair to say that Lego has had some big Marvel games over the years, so it’s definitely possible that we’ll get another one of them next. There have been plenty of films since Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 in 2017, so there’s a lot of content to cover.

For a start, there’s the Infinity Saga in its entirety as the Avengers took on the full might of Thanos in Infinity War and Endgame. They’re two of the biggest films in the history of cinema, let alone the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so they would make a great place to start the next Lego game.

If that isn’t enough, we’ve also had the huge success of the Spider-Man films, culminating in No Way Home at the end of 2021. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is incredibly popular and would make for a solid new game in brick form.

The Marvel Spider-Man games for Sony PlayStation have been huge and with the next one due out at the end of year it would be a strong announcement from Warner Bros. Games to make a Lego version of the three films. Homecoming was the origin story and saw Peter facing off against the Vulture and it was followed by Far From Home with Mysterio and the multiverse tears of No Way Home.

Both of these ideas would work well and then build in for more action with the Multiverse Saga in the future. Admittedly, MCU’s Phase 4 and 5 haven’t landed as well as previous installments, but in Lego form it could come to life in whole new ways, so we’ve definitely got our fingers crossed.

We’ll return to Star Wars for more Lego fun

Another option is to return to the Star Wars franchise. The fact is that the Lego series has covered the vast majority of the films, but the TV shows are a total untapped resource as of yet and would make for some incredible Lego fun.

The biggest of these is The Mandalorian, which is just about to close out its third season on Disney Plus. It’s got a huge cast of characters and with the addition of other shows like The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka it’s got lots to offer a sprawling Lego game similar to The Skywalker Saga.

Getting to ride on the Rancor around Mos Espa or taking on the pirates above Nevarro would be pretty cool. There’s plenty of appearances of the other characters in the various shows, for example Din and Grogu’s story continues in The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka first arrived on the scene in Season 2 of The Mandalorian, so it’s well placed for the games.

Admittedly, the last Lego game was a Star Wars adventure, so this could be a reason for it not being up next. There are also a number of other Far, Far Away games in the pipeline with nothing to do with Lego, so you could argue that there’s too much elsewhere for it to makes sense anytime soon.

There’s definitely a lot of merit to this argument, so it might be a longer shot tham some of the other next up options. Although, it does make sense with the timing with The Mandalorian Season 3 finishing and a lot of excitement about Ahsoka, Grand Admiral Thrawn and Project Necromancer.

DC could be another option

Next up we’ve got the prospect of a DC game to be Lego’s next big release. This makes a lot of sense as they’re both affiliated with Warner Bros., so there’s less cross-party ties to take into account and more of the revenue would go back into the system, instead of going to Disney with Marvel and Star Wars.

However, both of these have their detractors and there’s a certain amount of burn from having so much content from them, so a switch could work. If that isn’t enough to add to the prospect, there’s also the fact that we’ve got plenty of Batman and Superman action coming in the next few years.

This could means that it won’t be the next game, but maybe the one after that with the sequel to The Batman due in 2025 along with Superman Legacy. However, we’ve already had The Batman and with a Penguin TV series it could be the making of something.

If they did want to go with DC next, there’s plenty in the Extended Universe to base a Collection game on, but with James Gunn taking over at DC Studios the ship might already be out in the harbor. Shazam 2 and Black Adam failed to reignite the fuse, so we might have to pass on this until the new Universe gets underway.

Could Fantastic Beasts go Lego?

As with the Lego Star Wars series, every Harry Potter film has been covered in brick form. The logical conclusion to this is that maybe Fantastic Beasts could follow suit. There are three films in the franchise now and there should be more on the way, so it could be a good source of content for a game.

All three films have been a commercial success, so that could pass over to a Lego title if it was ever created. We’ve already seen how well things went for Hogwarts Legacy, so a Fantastic Beasts Lego game makes a lot of sense.

If they ever get around to tying the film-related series to Lego Fortnite then it’s got a lot of potential if it’s done right. A Fantastic Beasts game would give us all of the incredible creatures to add to the world, along with everything from Harry Potter, Star Wars and DC, so it could be amazing if the various franchises get on board.

We’ll get a wildcard Warner Bros game next

Finally, there’s always the chance of a breakaway wildcard entry and Warner Bros. films are probably the best option for this. Admittedly, we’ve got Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which came out from Lucasfilm in 2023, but that’s probably not enough to base a game on, despite the previous Indy games being a factor.

However, our random shout is for Lego Dune. The first film was a huge success and the second is due out in March 2024, so it could work really well. The environments are cool and there are a lot of characters, so it ticks plenty of boxes.

Throw in a little Sandworm riding and sound fighting skills and you’ve got the makings of a quality game. There’s also a lot of jokes to throw into the mix, blending the more serious nature of the story with Lego’s humor, so it would definitely be an interesting option.

Other wild card contenders are Mad Max with Furiousa due out in 2024, and a Warner movie mash-up Lego game featuring everything from the Barbie movie to Creed, Magic Mike and Wonka. Throw in some older hits like Godzilla, The Matrix, Tenet, Sherlock Holmes, 300, Edge of Tomorrow and Space Jam and swirl it in with a little of the same mixed up magic that makes Kingdom Hearts so good and you’ve got an interesting new game franchise. It’s a riskier approach than the others mentioned above, but it could be fun.

Finally, we’d love to see a sequel to Lego City Undercover. It’s one of our all-time favorites and with an all-original concept it wouldn’t need the same movie rights that the others do. It’s a game that came out as a Nintendo Wii U exclusive originally, with the console struggling for sales volume, so it missed out on its full potential, despite the later re-release on other systems.

If they ever do a Lego City Undercover 2 and launch it on all consoles and PC simultaneously it could be big. Add in even more inspiration/parody of Grand Theft Auto and it could land well.

Conclusion

If we look at all of the options, the one that makes the most sense to us is the Spider-Man options, which would be amazing, but all of the theories above could step into the gap and re-establish Lego as a big part of the gaming world.

We’ll be keeping an eye on things from TT Games in the coming months to see if anything is announced, so check back to get the latest. The fact that the developer has so many positions up on their jobs board is a good indicator that there’s plenty being worked on, so it’s only a matter of time before we get something brick-like from them.
