It was always going to be a feat of cinematic strength to create The Odyssey 2026 movie, but if anyone’s going to make it work on the big screen, it’s director and writer Christopher Nolan. The trailers, which you can see below, look impressive making the summer 2026 UK release one of the most anticipated in the movie calendar this year. The age rating hasn’t been officially confirmed as of yet, but you can keep up with the latest expectation with the section below.
AdvertisementFor anyone that doesn’t know already, The Odyssey (2026) is a movie adaptation of the Greek epic of the same name, written by Homer. There’s a lot of debate about the origin of the work. One thing we know for sure is that it has nothing to do with either The Simpsons, or Mario for that matter, but Christopher Nolan’s adaptation is sure to be at least as good as them in its own right (insert internal woe as you see fit).
As you might expect from the creator of The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Dunkirk and Oppenheimer, The Odyssey has an ensemble cast. The starring role of Odysseus, the king of Ithica, has gone to Matt Damon (The Last Duel, Good Will Hunting), who has worked with Nolan before on Interstellar and Oppenheimer.
The success of The Odyssey (2026) movie will depend a lot on the reviews, along with the age rating to a lesser extent. If the certificate is anything over a 12 in the UK, or PG-13 in the US then it might cut down on its potential viewership, but if the reviews are positive then it might be up there with Avengers: Doomsday.

The Odyssey (2026) movie US and UK release date:
The Odyssey movie release date was officially announced as Friday, 27th July 2026 in the US, which sets it up as a contender for the summer blockbuster crown. As things stand, this should also be release date for the UK, but it’s possible that it might be available in Britain a day or so earlier, so we’ll keep things updated here.
AdvertisementAs the film has been written and directed by Christopher Nolan, we’re expecting it to have a fairly length run on the big screen throughout the summer. It’s a strategy that worked really well for Avatar: The Way of Water and looking at the trailers it seems like there’s a good fit for it for The Odyssey. This should mean that you’ll have a fairly lengthy wait before it eventually comes out for streaming, with a likely release date being months after the cinematic debut in July.
As with digital streaming, there are no details as of yet about when The Odyssey (2026) will get a DVD or Blu-ray release date yet. However, the fact that its a Christopher Nolan film is a pretty good indicator that it’ll be a big part of the longer term release of the film. It should be a big seller in the run-up to Christmas 2026, so October or November is a pretty safe bet so early on.
The Odyssey (2026) movie age rating certificate (UK & US)
The Odyssey (2026) movie age rating will be confirmed by the British Board of Film Certification (BBFC) in the UK as we get closer to the release date, but there are a few things to go on in terms of what it might be. Its a similar story for the US. Both Interstellar and Inception having an age rating of 12 in the UK (PG-13 in the US), but Oppenheimer has a 15 certificate in Britain. Based on this, The Odyssey could be awarded either of these and the final rating will depend of the content.
Oppenheimer had stronger language and sex scenes, which contributed to the higher rating. The Odyssey (2026) is based on a book that was written in the 8th century BC, so there probably won’t be much strong language. However, there’s definitely scope for sex scenes based on the story, so it will depend on the direction Christopher Nolan decides to take.
Finally, if you compare the movie to a few other releases over the last 12 months, this should help to give you more details on The Odyssey movie UK age rating. Avatar: Fire and Ash was given a 12A certificate and Jurassic World Rebirth was given a 12. They both have high levels of action sequences, which should be similar to the upcoming Christopher Nolan adaption.
For us, an age rating of 12 in the UK, PG-13 in the US, makes the most sense for The Odyssey (2026). Giving it a wider audience fits the content, whereas the more adult focus of Oppenheimer was more appropriate to the real-life story behind the film. As eve, we’ll update you with more details as they’re confirmed.

Runtime
As with the age rating, The Odyssey movie runtime hasn’t been announced as of yet, but there’s plenty to go on. Firstly, Homer’s epic is huge, so based on the source material alone, this has got 3-hours plus written all over it. However, you can also factor in the runtime of Christopher Nolan’s previous movie, Oppenheimer, which clocked in at 3-hours long.
We’ll get the official runtime for The Odyssey as we get closer to the release date, but in general you should plan for either a big bladder preparation window or look for a good space in the action to nip to the toilet. If you’re based in the US where they tend to freeze you with air conditioning in the summer then you might want to take a coat to this one.
Story
The Odyssey tells the story of Odysseus, the King of Ithica, as he journeys back home following a ten year deployment in the Trojan War. It’s not an easy voyage, and he faces many challenges and setbacks along the way with both gods and monsters to contend with.
As time goes by, his wife, Penelope, has her own challenges with a number of suitors vying for her attention when Odysseus doesn’t return as planned. His son, Telemachus sets out to find him, but with so many obstacles, the three of them face tough times.
The Odyssey (2026) Cast & Crew
In addition to Matt Damon as Odysseus, the cast also includes Tom Holland (Spider-man No Way Home) as Telemachus and Anne Hathaway (Interstellar, The Dark Knight Rises) as Penelope. The movie is also set to star Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya and Charlize Theron, so it’s another big-hitting production from the writer and director.
As with his previous films, Christopher Nolan has also produced The Odyssey with his long-time partner and wife, Emma Thomas.
The Odyssey (2026) movie all trailers
As things stand, there has only been one trailer released for The Odyssey (2026) and you can see it in all it’s glory with the video below. It doesn’t feature the entire cast, but you can see Matt Damon, Tom Holland and Anne Hathaway in their roles.
AdvertisementYou can also get a brief glimpse of the giant cyclops, Polyphemus, along with the storms and specters that Odysseus takes on during his quest to get back home. The Odyssey (2026) movie first impressions
It’s easy to think, that if there’s anyone who can pull off a movie adaptation of The Odyssey in 2026, it’s Christopher Nolan. However, it’s a bit more nuanced than that. The trailer looks very impressive, and with Homer’s original story content to work from, it should be a tour de force throughout.
The cast brings a lot of grounding to the production, and the mythical elements look like they’re going to feel like real challenges for Odysseus and his crew. All of this should contribute to positive reviews and “must-watch” hype as we approach the release date. Even if the age rating is on the higher side, it should still be one of the biggest films of the year.
However, Christopher Nolan isn’t infallible, so making too many assumptions about the larger impact of The Odyssey is hard to justify. Can it be the biggest film of the year in terms box office response? Probably not with Avengers Doomsday reuniting the Russo Brothers later in 2026. It would need to be an absolute masterpiece of epic proportions to take the crown for the year.
If you look back at Christopher Nolan’s previous films, his best performances came from The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, both of which grossed over $1 billion. His only period movie is Dunkirk, which had great reviews, but it maxed out at half that. With this in mind, it would need to be an incredible reception for The Odyssey to get close to the $2.8 billion gross of Avengers Endgame.
