The Exorcist Believer will take us back to the origins of the series, so here’s everything you need to know about the UK release date and latest on the age rating. It’s the sixth film in the series, but it’s set to be a direct sequel to the original movie, so we’ll also cover the story, cast and runtime, as well as the trailer.
It’s due out in time for Halloween 2023, so it’ll have some competition from the other big horror movie out this year, Five Nights at Freddy’s. Both have similar production ties to Blumhouse Productions with Jason Blum co-producing The Exorcist Believer and heading things up for the FNAF movie.
AdvertisementDavid Gordon Green is the director of Believer having cut his horror teeth on a trio of Halloween films, starting out with the 2018 sequel to the original movie in the series. This puts him in a good place to do a similar job with the 2023 release as he continues his writing partnership with Danny McBride.
Their credits go all the way back to Pineapple Express in 2008 with Green directing and McBride in the cast, but they teamed up again in Your Highness with the addition of a writing credit for McBride. Having written the three Halloween films together, it’s time for them to do a similar job with The Exorcist Believer and its two follow-up movies.

What is The Exorcist Believer UK release date?
AdvertisementThe Exorcist Believer has been given a general release date of October 13th, 2023, which we’re expecting to apply to the UK as well as in North America. However, it’s not currently listed in cinemas over here, so there might be some variation before it comes out.
As mentioned above, it’ll have a lot of competition from the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie, which is due out in the UK on October 27th, 2023. However, that does mean that it’ll have a couple of weeks to itself to take a good chunk of the scare season’s box office.

We’re expecting FNAF to be the more popular film, so once that comes out it probably won’t leave that much room for The Exorcist Believer. However, reviews might change all of that, but looking at the two trailers side-by-side, Freddy’s appears to have the edge in terms of potential.
With the film coming out in early October, it should go on to arrive on DVD, Blu-ray and standard digital in time for the winter half-term holidays in mid February. We’ve predicted that this will be earlier for the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie, but that’s either a long-shot or a unique situation thanks to the fan following of the games.
What is The Exorcist Believer age rating certificate
There is now official The Exorcist Believer age rating certificate for the UK as of yet, but it’s been given a rating of R in North America already. This equates to either a 15 or 18 over here in the UK, so we’ll have to wait for more details from the BBFC.
However, there’s a lot to go on from the previous films in the series, all of which were also rated R in the US. In the UK, there has been a bit more variation with the original film picking up an 18 certificate and it was a similar story for The Exorcist II and III.
Since then, the films have been given an age rating of 15, so it’s going to be interesting to see how things work out for Believer. The trailer has a rating of 15, and it’s pretty full on, so it would take a lot more gore for the final film to come out higher than that.
Runtime
The Exorcist Believer runtime is yet to be confirmed, but if you look at the first part to David Gordon Green’s Halloween trailer it was 1 hour and 46 minutes long. We’re not expecting things to be that long here, but it should be a little close to the two hour mark if the trailer is anything to go by.
AdvertisementThe last Exorcist film was the prequel film, Dominion, and it clocked in at 1 hour and 56 minutes, so that should give you a ball park for Believer. It probably won’t be that much shorter than that, but it could go longer with the slightly extended build up it looks like we’re going to get with the story.
The Exorcist Believer story
The story sees two girls getting possessed by the demon from the first film in The Exorcist Believer. Their parents try to find a solution to the problem and eventually turn to Chris MacNeil, the mother of the girl possessed in the 1973 original.
She recognizes the demon straight away and concludes that they’ll need the combined might of all religions to banish it. You can see in the trailer below that it appears to follow a similar path to the 1973 film that started it all, but we’re expecting it to have a few surprises in store before the end.
We already know that it is at least on of two films, with the second due out in 2025, so clearly there’s got to be at least a little setup for that. It might mean that the ending is a dark twist with similarities to the bitter sweet closing to every Stranger Things season.
Cast
AdvertisementThe Exorcist Believer cast includes Leslie Odom Jr as the father for one of the two girls. He’s joined by Ellen Burstyn, who reprises here role as Chris MacNeil, along with Ann Dowd (Hereditary), who appears to play a nurse looking after the girls in hospital.
The cast also includes Jennifer Nettles, Norbert Leo Butz, Lidya Jewett, and Olivia Marcum.
Trailer
It’s a pretty long trailer, and while it does a lot to explain the setup, it looks like it’s teasing a few twists and turns to come in the final stages of The Exorcist Believer. A few of the scenes look like the demon might be a bit more world wise this time around, with a few new tricks up its sleeve.
It’s doubled its efforts with two girls and it appears to be swirling them together for something big. What that is, we’ll have to wait and see, but it’s the only way it’s going to set things up for The Exorcist Deceiver in 2025.
