Story

Spider-Man 2 PS5 is the sequel to both Marvel’s Spider-Man in 2018 and Spider-Man Miles Morales in 2020 with the latter being one of the first games to launch on the PlayStation 5. This time, you get to play both characters as they team up to take on Kraven the Hunter, who has descended on New York City.

He’s got them firmly in his sights as his next big game prize, but there’s the added complexity that Peter has bonded with the alien symbiote, Venom. This gives him a wide range of new moves and abilities, but as always in the Spider-Man universe, it also brings its own challenges.

We’re expecting Peter to start the game as he was and for the story to introduce Venom as you progress. You can see the gameplay trailer that Miles doesn’t know about the the symbiote when they’re tracking Kurt Conners / The Lizard.

He sees the tendrils and asks if they’re new threads, which means that he thinks its a new part of his suit. It also hints at Peter having a different initial story path to Miles that will see him coming into contact with the Venom Symbiote.

The gameplay trailer also confirms that Harry Osbourne will be a big part of the story, continuing on from the Spider-Man Miles Morales end-credits scene. Peter tells Miles that Kurt Conners is the only one that can save Harry, which all hints at Green Goblin getting in the mix before the end.

Gameplay

You can watch the Spider-Man 2 PS5 gameplay reveal trailer above to get a look at the action, which follows similar 3rd person action mechanics as in the last two games. This will see you swinging around a larger area of New York City, including Brooklyn and Queens and battling it out with enemies like Kraven’s hunter gang.

The new addition to exploration is the wing suit, which will allow you to glide around New York and ride on wind pockets throughout the city to get even more distance. In terms of combat, the biggest change is the introduction of the Venom symbiote for Peter Parker, which will give him some epic moves with his flying tendrils.

You’ll also get a new web rope move that will allow you to create high wire lines over enemies to help out in stealth missions. There will be more of the new suit upgrades and abilities for both playable characters as you make your way through the story.

The chase sequence in the gameplay video above looks incredible with a lot of pace and some cool cinematic moves to unleash on Kraven the Hunter’s forces. You can see the improvements to the graphics on the previous games with it being a PS5 timed-exclusive, but it should look pretty good on PC if they make the port in the years following the initial release date.

Spider-Man PS5 release date

Spider-Man 2 PS5 has now been confirmed for a release date of October 20th, 2023, so it looks set to be one of the biggest titles coming out in time for Christmas this year. As things stand, its big competition will be Alan Wake II, the Alone in the Dark remake, and Assassin’s Creed Mirage.

They’re all confirmed for October, but it’s still early days and there’s plenty of time for more announcements. We haven’t had anything from Nintendo about the latter half of the year, so there could be one or two more big titles for Spider-Man 2 to compete over the holidays.

Finally, there’s a collector’s edition that gives you a steelbook display case and a 19-inch statue of Peter and Miles fighting a huge Venom. This could be a hint at the final boss fight, but with Kraven the Hunter and the Osbournes in the mix it could go a number of different ways. The price us a whopping $229.99 / £219.99/ €249.99/ ¥31,980 at launch and they’ll probably sell out fast.

Age rating

The age rating for Spider-Man 2 PS5 has been confirmed to be T for teen by ESRB in north America now that the release date has been confirmed. This includes notes for violence, blood, mild language and drug references, so it’s a similar situation as with the previous two games.

The UK age hasn’t been officially confirmed as of yet, but the certificate for America it looks like it’ll be similar to the other titles in the series. Both of them were given 16 classifications by PEGI, so this is a pretty good indicator for the sequel.
