Black Adam movie UK release date, age rating and parents guide

The DC FanDome 2020 and again the 2021 “takeover” of New York’s Times Square showed us the first official teaser trailer for the Black Adam movie, so here’s everything you need to know about it including the UK release date, age rating and parents guide. We’ll also take you through the story, cast of characters and our estimated runtime in a lightning strike.

The film and concept of Black Adam has been a strong passion for actor Dwayne Johnson, one of the biggest action stars in Hollywood. With himself viewing it as a character that comes around once in a lifetime, stating that he was born to play such a great antihero.

The movie’s story sees Black Adam resurfacing after thousands of years imprisonment. He’s got an old school heavy-handed approach to hero-work, which puts him on a collision course with the Justice League of America.

This sees him facing off against Hawkman, Atom Smasher, Cyclone and Doctor Fate, so it looks set to be a big hitting introduction. The JLA tries to show him the error of his ways, but there’s a larger force at play behind all of this, so it’s going to be interesting to see how it all goes down.

Cast

It has been confirmed that we’ll get to see Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson stepping into the boots and leading the charge as Black Adam/Teth-Adam, the main character and anti-hero of the movie. The cast of the film will also see Pierce Brosnan taking on the mantle of sorcerer Dr. Fate/Kent Nelson, who states in the official teaser trailer that nothing in his career compares to this movie, not even the likes of him playing James Bond.

They’re joined by Aldis Hodges, who plays the role of Justice Society of America (JSA) leader Hawkman, and Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, a superhero who can control wind as well as create sound waves. Noah Centineo plays the part of JSA member Atom Smasher, who can ultimately control his own molecular structure enabling him to change size and his strength.

It’s going to be fun to see where the movie goes within a growing and ever developing DC Universe and how it links in with Shazam and alongside other DC movies. We’ll update you on more information on the cast as they’re confirmed.

Age rating and parents guide

The UK age rating for Black Adam has now been confirmed by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) with the release date just around the corner. It’s been given a 12A certificate, which correlates with the PG-13 rating it has picked up in North America.

This is in line with other DC and Warner Bros Pictures movies like Aquaman and Justice League, which were both 12 certificates. We’re assuming that they will want to tie the movie in with other characters and aspects in the DC universe, meaning it was always likely to be a similar situation here.

It will be interesting to see which direction director Jaume Collet-Serra and writers Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvanit wish to take Black Adam, with its darker tone and antihero nature of the character. From the teaser trailer, it is clear that the overall movie may try and push the limits of action, violence and language, but still within the broader DC universe.

In terms of our parents guide, Black Adam contains moderate violence, threat, horror and some injury detail. Looking at other previous films from the studios this is a minor step up, but not enough to tip it into the higher age ratings. For parents that have seen the other films, you’ll know that the films have a lighter tone and sensitivity, but Black Adam seems to take things a little more into the darker territory of The Batman.

Black Adam movie UK release date

With production in full swing, the UK release date had been slated for 29th July 2022, but it has now been put back until 21st October 2022, so it’s gone from summer blockbuster contender to autumn adventure. To save the UK from too many plot leaks and spoilers, it is also slated to be released on the same date in North America.

It is positioned without any other big movie releases around that time at the moment with only, but there may be more announcements along the way. Still, things look promising for Black Adam’s first outing and it should do well at the box office, which could mean future installments on this new character.

The autumnal release date means that it should then arrive on DVD and Blu-ray in the New Year, but then we saw films close the gap between cinema and home entertainment release to make it in time for Christmas sales last year and that might be the case here.

We’ll update you with more details on the film as they get confirmed. You can also check out our movie news section to keep tabs on the latest upcoming films, or visit the Warner Bros website at https://www.warnerbros.co.uk/.

Black Adam movie runtime

As with the age rating, the overall runtime for Black Adam has also been announced now that we’re closer to the release date. It’s 2 hours and 4 minutes long.

As a rule of thumb, DC movies average a runtime of around 2 ½ hours if you look at Shazam and other main DC comic release like Aquaman (2018) and Wonder Woman 1984 (2020), so it’s a little shorter than the norm.

Trailers:

The teaser trailer first came out in August 2020 at the DC FanDome. It was an animated back story for the film with Dwayne Johnson narrating in the background as an introduction to the Black Adam character.

It took another two years for the first full trailer for the movie get a release, giving us our first proper look at it in June 2022. There’s more about Black Adam’s present day intentions of doing things his own way and his position as either the destroyer of the world, or its saviour, which links into his anti-hero status.

Trailer 2 dropped in September later in the year and cranked things up a notch with hints of Kratos’ rage from God of War. We also got to see a little more of Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone and Doctor Fate flexing his sorcerer powers.
