Avengers: Doomsday age rating, UK release date and first impressions

It was always going to be a feat of cinematic ingenuity to bring the Avengers back together on this scale, but if anyone’s going to make it work, it’s directors Anthony and Joe Russo. The trailers, which you can see below, look impressive, making the December 2026 UK release one of the most anticipated in the movie calendar this year. The age rating hasn’t been officially confirmed as of yet, but you can keep up with the latest for this with the section below.

As you probably already know, Avengers: Doomsday is a Marvel Studios superhero film and the direct sequel to Avengers: Endgame, bringing together heroes from three different universes to face the might of Doctor Victor von Doom. There’s a lot of history behind how the sequel came together, including a change of villain and a change of director along the way, but the Russo brothers’ return is sure to make it a big deal for Marvel fans in its own right.

As you might expect from the directors of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Doomsday has an enormous ensemble cast. The starring role has gone to Robert Downey Jr., who returns to the MCU not as Tony Stark, but as the S-tier villain, Victor von Doom, better known as Doctor Doom.

The success of Avengers: Doomsday will depend a lot on the reviews, along with the age rating to a lesser extent, but if we’re being brutally honest, it might all hinge on how well RDJ sticks the landing for his Doctor Doom portrayal. None of the trailers have featured the character without his mask on, so there’s a lot riding on how well this comes across, and with just a matter of months to go until the release date comes around, it’s going to be interesting to see whether or not that show it before the big screen debut or they save it for fans that turn up early to see the film.

Avengers: Doomsday movie US and UK release date

The Avengers: Doomsday release date is officially confirmed as Friday, 18th December 2026 in the US, which sets it up as a contender for the biggest Christmas release of the year. As things stand, this should also be the release date for the UK, but it’s possible timings could shift slightly depending on how the international rollout is handled, so we’ll keep things updated here.

The 6th entry in the main Avengers cinematic universe was originally scheduled in for May 2025, before being pushed back to May 2026 and then again to its current December slot to give the production more time. As with previous Avengers crossovers, we’re expecting a fairly lengthy run in cinemas over the festive period, meaning a wait of several months before it’s likely to land on digital or streaming.

As with digital release, there are no details as of yet about when Avengers: Doomsday will get a DVD or Blu-ray release date. Given the scale of the production, though, expect it to be a big seller well into 2027.

Avengers: Doomsday movie age rating certificate (UK & US)

The Avengers: Doomsday age rating will be confirmed by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) in the UK as we get closer to the release date, but there’s a fair bit to base assumptions on. Most recent Marvel Studios crossover films, including Endgame and Infinity War, have carried a 12A in the UK (PG-13 in the US), and there’s little to suggest Doomsday will deviate from that pattern.

There are hints that the film will have a more serious and somber tone than some recent MCU entries, with a focus on high-stakes and serious intent rather than comedic set pieces. That’s unlikely to push the rating up on its own, since action and fantasy violence of this kind is generally well within 12A territory, but the early signs suggests Doomsday may feel a little weightier than some of its more recent predecessors.

For us, a 12A in the UK and a PG-13 in the US remains the most likely scenario, which is in keeping with the rest of the Infinity Saga and Multiverse Saga releases. As ever, we’ll update you with more details as they’re confirmed.

Runtime

As with the age rating, the official Avengers: Doomsday runtime hasn’t been announced as of yet. Given the sheer size of the cast, spanning the Avengers, the Wakandans, the New Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men, it wouldn’t be a surprise if this ends up being one of the longer entries in the franchise. Endgame, for comparison, ran just over three hours, and with the Russo Brothers back at the helm, it’ll be a surprise if it’s all that much shorter in length.

We’ll get the official runtime for Doomsday as we get closer to the release date, but with a cast this large, you should probably plan a fair few snacks to keep you going.

Story

Avengers: Doomsday is set soon after the events of Thunderbolts*, and picks up in the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame. Three separate groups of heroes from three different universes are drawn together to face a single, overwhelming threat: heroes from the main MCU timeline, the Fantastic Four from their own parallel Earth, and a version of the X-Men from a further separate universe entirely.

At the centre of it all is Victor von Doom, a figure of immense and growing power, as he rises up to take the place of both Thanos and Kang as the biggest threat to the universe. Marvel has kept much of the plot under wraps, but the story has got a number of open-ended developments to build on since Endgame, with returning favourites like Captain America having to step back into the fight.

Avengers: Doomsday Cast & Crew

In addition to Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, the cast includes Chris Evans returning as Steve Rogers / Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards / Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm / Invisible Woman, and Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson / Captain America. It’s going to be interesting to see how they square things with the two Caps in the mix, but Mackei and Rogers have worked well together throughout their previous on-screen efforts, so it should come together well enough.

The film also brings back Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Letitia Wright as Shuri / Black Panther, and a host of X-Men veterans including Ian McKellen as Magneto, Patrick Stewart as Professor X and James Marsden as Cyclops.

It’s an enormous ensemble beyond that too, taking in Paul Rudd, Joseph Quinn, Tom Hiddleston, Channing Tatum, Simu Liu, David Harbour, Winston Duke and many more, so it’s easily one of the biggest productions Marvel Studios has ever put together.

Anthony and Joe Russo direct from a script by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely. Alan Silvestri, composer of the Infinity War and Endgame scores, has returned to score the film.

Avengers: Doomsday movie all trailers

A full trailer for Avengers: Doomsday was shown to audiences at CinemaCon in April 2026, and it arrived officially online with the Marvel YouTube channel on Jul 20, 2026. Ahead of that, Marvel had already rolled out a run of shorter teasers, each tied to a different corner of the cast, from Steve Rogers to Thor to the X-Men to the Wakandans, with each clip ending on a countdown clock to the film’s release date. Avengers: Doomsday movie first impressions

Well, if there’s anyone who can pull off reuniting this many corners of the Marvel universe in one film, it’s the Russo brothers. However, there’s a lot to do to stick the ultimate landing, not least of all the portrayal and characterization of Doctor Doom. The return of so many characters and the delivery of this in the movie will also need to be faultless to give the film a chance of reaching the heights of both Avengers Infinity War and Endgame. With three separate hero teams converging on a single villain, it should be a genuine spectacle, but the question is will it deliver the kind of return fans are hoping for.

The scale of the cast brings a lot of weight to the production, and the more serious, somber tone glimpsed in the marketing suggests the Russos are aiming for something with real stakes rather than another crowd-pleasing romp. All of this should contribute to strong reviews and “must-watch” hype as we approach the release date. The previous two Avengers films weren’t faultless by any stretch of the imagination, but they hit harder than any of the other MCU films, so that might be the case again here in Doomsday.

Can it be the biggest film of the year at the box office? Early tracking certainly suggests so, especially with Endgame’s record-breaking run as a point of reference for what a Russo brothers Avengers film can do. It shares its release weekend with Dune: Part Three, so it may not have things entirely to itself, but few films in 2026 look better placed to dominate the box office than this one with the possible exception of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
