What we also know from the video is that when the release date does come around, it’ll be much less Xbox ONE exclusive than it’s predecessor. Instead, it’ll be available on PS4 and PC from day one this time, as well as XBox ONE, and if anything we’ll be surprised if it doesn’t eventually go one step further and arrive on both Mac and the fabled Nintendo NX before too long too.
Titanfall is a blast of a game that pioneered the online multiplayer online gaming experience for first person shooters, while also introducing some of the coolest new gameplay developments the genre has seen in a long time. This included double jump jetpack fun, free-running across walls and zipline moves, making it the most fluid FPS experience we’ve had in a long time.
While this made the original a breakaway success, it also puts a lot of pressure on Titanfall 2 to live up to the expectations that it has set down. How will it evolve first person shooters further, will there be more online story development, what new moves and tech will you get to add to your arsenal? These are the questions that will dictate the success of the sequel. Get them right and it’ll be another success for developers, Respawn Entertainment, but if it gets them wrong then it’ll be a huge let down.
The teaser trailer gives very little away about any of this, featuring instead a smouldering escape pod, followed by the arrival of a mecha titan that slams its sword into the jungle floor surrounding it. While this hints at an evolving, survivalist narrative, it doesn’t feel like it’s enough to get us as excited about the second game in the series as we were ahead of the release of the opening entry.
