Will Ahsoka feature Star Wars’ Project Necromancer?

While there is no mention or direct continuation of Star Wars’ Project Necromancer in the first two episodes of Ahsoka, it’s still a 50-50 possibility. There’s a lot to support the possibility, but there are also arguments against it, so we’re going to take you through both sides of the argument.

More episodes of Ahsoka will be streaming in the coming weeks, so we won’t have that long to wait to see if Project Necromancer features in the plot. Episode 3 will stream on Disney Plus on August 30th, 2023, and it looks like the story is going to pick up on the Grand Admiral Thrawn plot line in a big way.

The big debate is whether or not Project Necromancer is a reference to this or some other future development in The Mandalorian. We know that the events of Ahsoka are in a similar timeline to that of Season 3 of The Mandalorian, so it’s going to be interesting to see how things weave together.

What is Star Wars’ Project Necromancer?

The honest answer is that nobody (apart from the inner Filoni circle) know exactly what Star Wars’ Project Necromancer is. As things stand, it’s only reference is a vague mention in Episode 7 of the 3rd season of The Mandlorian, but it was heavily hinted to be the next big development on the part of the empirical remnants.

It was part of a discussion between Moff Gideon – the main villain from The Mandalorian – and the shadow council for the old Empire. The things that’s interesting is that Project Necromancer was mentioned in the same conversation about the impending return of Grand Admiral Thrawn.

The implication was that the Project is what the council is working on as its main effort to wrest power back from the New Republic. We already know that this goes on to be the case with the First Order in Star Wars Episode VII – The Force Awakens, so it’s starting to sound like this might be where it all starts.

If you don’t know, a necromancer is someone that can communicate or awaken the dead. The speculation is that either this is to do with bringing back the Empire, bringing back Grand Admiral Thrawn, or the Emperor himself, who we know goes on to return to be the main threat for Rey in The Rise of Skywalker.

Project Necromancer in Ahsoka?

Ahsoka looks to pick up on the timeline from Season 3 of The Mandalorian. We know that the shadow council hadn’t managed to bring back Grand Admiral Thrawn at that stage and we also know that he’s going to return in Ahsoka, so it’s logical to assume that one follows the other.

It’s also safe to assume that if Grand Admiral Thrawn is included in the plot then there must be a link to the shadow council. They could be pulling the strings to get the map to find Thrawn and it could all be a part of Project Necromancer, which we’re pretty sure will go on to be the next big Star Wars TV series story arc.

The argument in favor of this is stronger if the efforts of the Project are all directed at bringing back Thrawn, but that’s not necessarily the case. The conversation between Moff Gideon and the council seemed to imply that the end result of Necromancer wasn’t the return of Thrawn, but something bigger.

However, the implication is that the Grand Admiral is a big part of that plan, so even if Ahsoka doesn’t mention Project Necromancer directly, it should still be linked no matter what. It’s also not impossible that the Project is more specific to Thrawn than we realise, because the conversation was so shrouded that it’s hard to say anything for sure.

The main argument against it being linked is to do with the specifics of the Project, which we won’t find out about until later. For example, if it’s somehow linked to the Emperor on Exegol then the whole Thrawn thing could just be a decoy to keep the New Republic and what’s left of the Jedi spinning its wheels while Palpatine recovers.

Alternatively, it could be something else completely. It could be to do with Gideon’s Force-sensitive clones or somehow building from this to give them the edge against the New Republic, or any number of other possibilities.

The timing definitely seems to point to learning more about Project Necromancer during the first season of Ahsoka, but it’s not a certainty at this point. Dave Filoni, Jon Favreau and the wider Disney Star Wars team might be playing a much longer game on this one.

As such, Season 1 could keep the focus on the return of Thrawn and Ezra Bridger, saving Project Necromancer for either S2 or the 4th season of The Mandalorian. As ever, there are plenty of options for the future of the Star Wars TV series and with a strong opening two episodes, Ahsoka has done a lot to fuel the fire.
