Deadpool (2016) UK release date, trailer and DVD details

Deadpool (2016) movieThough the character used to be much more well known in the comic book community than in the general public, he’s already blow up off the chart with his first big screen outing in Deadpool (2016). Marvel has pretty much done the same for the red suited, trash-talking superhero as it did for the merry band of misfits of from Guardians Of The Galaxy, and with a growing fan following, we’re expecting the DVD, Blu-ray and digital download release to be as .

The film gave Ryan Reynolds an opportunity to reprieve some of his action hero credentials following the negative reception received by The Green Lantern in 2011. However, it’s not his first outing as Deadpool within the Marvel Cinematic Universe as he first appeared as the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009, but the latest iteration is much closer to the comic book version than was previously the case.

Release date

Cinema:

Deadpool had a UK release date of Wednesday the 10th February 2016, a couple of days in advance of the US general release on the 12th February. It was available to see in 2D, IMAX and 3D and as with all Marvel movies there will be a lot of action and special effects, so it was a good shout to see it in one of the latter two formats to get the most out of the release.

It arrived in cinemas in the UK during the same weekend as Pride And Prejudice And Zombies and Zoolander 2 got their releases, so it had a fair amount of box office competition. DVD, Blu-ray and digital download:

While the US home entertainment release has been confirmed for the 10th May 2016, the UK DVD, Blu-ray and digital download release date appeared to be a highly guarded secret initially. However, it has now been confirmed for the 13th June 2016, so there’s not long to wait to see the crazy, red suited maniac blazing up a DVD player near you. The film will also be available on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray with the format’s recent arriving in the UK.

Story

While Ryan Reynolds (Criminal) looks a lot more like the comic book character, the story for the film doesn’t follow the same plot as the introduction of Dead Pool to Marvel Comics back in 1991 as a supervillain in The New Mutants. While he eventually went on to become an anti-hero in the comics, the film will see him erring on that side of the fence as a failed cancer cure experiment disfigured his skin and leaves him with accelerated healing powers.

However, the new origin story still retains former Special Forces operative turned mercenary back story of Wade Wilson and his unique sense of humour, plus his potty mouth antics are out in force during the film. The action heats up when he heads out with his red suit, new abilities, smoking pistols and flying swords to hunt down the guys in the Weapons X programme that gave him his powers.

Cast

In addition to Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, the cast also includes Morena Baccarin (Homeland) as Wade’s girlfriend, Vanessa, as well as T. J. Miller (Transformers: Age Of Extinction) as his best buddy Jack Hammer. Ed Skrein plays the brutal Ajax, Gina Carano is his emo-girl sidekick, Angel Dust, Andre Tricoteux is the steel man mountain that is Piotr Rasputin / Colossus, Leslie Uggams plays the elderly, but equally potty-mouthed Blind Al and Jed Rees is the guy that recruits Wade for the experiment.

Production

Tim Miller directs, breaking out of his previous creative director credits for opening sequences to both The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and Thor: The Dark World. The story has been written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Zombieland), based on the original comic book character creation of Fabian Nicieza and Rob Liefeld. The movie producers are Lauren Shuler Donner (X-Men: Days Of Future Past), Simon Kinberg (Fantastic Four (2015)) and Ryan Reynolds.

The production has been classified as 15 in the UK by the British Board Of Film Classification (BBFC) ahead of the cinematic release and we’re expecting the DVD, Blu-ray and digital download of the film to have similar age restrictions with the amount effing, jeffing, blasting and elbow dropping that goes on in the film.

First impressions

Deadpool (2016) looks set to be a darkly funny, hard-hitting superhero movie release that takes the the X-Men series into a whole new realm of craziness. Reynolds makes for a pretty accurate representation of the character, rebooting it significantly since X-Men Origins: Wolverine, with the slate getting wiped clean possibly thanks to the timeline realignment from Days Of Future Past. The trailer below looks impressive and while we’re not huge fans of the glorification of gunfire, there’s more than a little fantasy approach to everything, similar to Kick Ass, which does a lot to compensate for this.

Expect extreme irreverence, hyper-violence and the kind of humour that you’d only find at the very bottom of a very rummy, deep, dark barrel on a night out with Jimmy Carr. The word on the street is that the red band trailer below only scrapes the surface of what made it in to the full film, so if it’s already over the line you should probably back away now, because it’s going to get a heavy coating of urine to go with your sauce covered chips.

If you missed it on the big screen, this is definitely one to look forward to on DVD, Blu-ray or digital download when it arrives later in the year. It’s an early shout to be a new addition to the collection, with a lot of potential for multiple watches for years to come.
