Dune (2021) UK DVD and Blu-ray release date

Denis Villeneuve’s tense adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi novel has arrived on the big screen, so here are the latest details on the Dune 2021 UK DVD and Blu-ray release date. With solid reviews, a big cast and incredible imagery, it’s definitely going to be on a lot of home entertainment collection wish lists, so here’s everything we know about when it will come out.

Dune 2021 UK DVD and Blu-ray release date

The story covers the first half of the novel, which itself was split into two when it was first published in 1965 in Analogue magazine. It sets things up pretty well for the sequel, which will complete the story of Paul Atreides as he fights to save Arrakis from the tyranny of Baron Harkonnen, while also befriending the local people and fauna (giant sand worms) along the way.

We’re not expecting Dune 2 for another few years, but if the first film is anything to go by then the second part should be a stunning climax to it all. It’s also set up to include more of Zendaya in her role as Chani as she works with Paul to overthrow the might of the Harkonnen horde with the help of a sand worm or three.

UK Blu-ray and DVD release date

The Dune (2021) UK DVD and Blu-ray release date has now been confirmed for Monday 31st January 2022, which ties in with our initial outlook for when it will come out. When we tracked forward from the cinema debut on the 21st October 2021, we expected it around January 2022, which is pretty close to the mark as things turned out. The only caveat was that the knock on impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the home entertainment market, resulting in less of a gap from the big screen release.

The main examples of this had been Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Rings and No Time To Die, which have both had much quicker turnarounds. Although, in all fairness, it looked like they were just being sped up a little to arrive in time for the Christmas holidays having had their cinema release dates pushed back due to the pandemic.

However, that isn’t the case, and there appears to be a general shift in terms of how quickly films are arriving on DVD and Blu-ray, which has given us Dune Part I relatively quickly. It may not have arrived in time for Christmas sales, but it isn’t too far away, so if you’ve got some vouchers left over then it could well be a good shout for your collection.

North America release

Dune (2021) will come out in North America on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K on the 11th January 2022, which will continue the competition with Venom 2. Both films were out on the big screen within a week of each other and that’s the case again for home entertainment both in the US and the UK.

However, the digital release is already available in North America, so that’s your first opportunity to own the film. You can also rent the film, but there isn’t that much difference between the digital purchase option and rental price at the time of writing.

Review

Dune (2021) is an impressive adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel and the fact that it’s just the first half of the story means that it has enough space to tell the story in more detail than David Lynch’s 1984 film. There’s still an element of stretching, but it’s negligible, especially when you factor in the artistry of Denis Villeneuve’s vision for the film.

It ticks a lot of boxes for sci-fi fans and while it’s obviously the setup for the big finale in Part II, it’s got more than enough style and action to stand on its own. The performances from the incredible cast is a huge part of the success of the film and they’ll make re-watching the film an easy option, combining well with the set construction, special effects and fight sequences.

With such incredible artwork behind the 2021 adaptation, large cast of big name stars, and the sci-fi lore of Frank Herbert’s storytelling at the heart of the film, the Blu-ray and 4K versions should have some incredible special features. The DVD will probably not have any bonus content, especially with such a long film already, so if you want the full Dune experience then the Blu-ray is your best bet.

DVD and Blu-ray review: 4/5
