Forspoken how to counter attack

Forspoken how to counter attack

There’s a fair bit to get used to in Forspoken, but one of the most important is how to counter attack. It’s a bit of a weird mechanic, but if you use it wisely then it will help you finish off the various bosses a whole lot quicker.

There is a brief tutorial on how to counter attack in the game, but it’s in the middle of a main boss fight against Tanta Sila’s Recreant Knight, so it’s easy to miss the importance of it. Using the counter attack during the rest of the fight will definitely make short work of it, but you can muddle through on everything else you’ve been doing up until this time.

It definitely feels like it would have been better to place this tutorial a little earlier and against lower level enemies to practice it before taking on Recreant Knight. While the move is important to the fight, it might have been more impactful if it had been teed up a little before it and then Cuff could remind you about counter attacks during the boss fight.

For anyone that skipped over the tutorial or if you’ve gotten further into Forspoken and forgotten how to counter, you can check out everything you need to do below. It takes a few moments of adjustment, because it’s so dissimilar to any other game, but when it works it works.

Another reason that it’s easy to get things a little mixed up is that there is no block move in Forspoken. Cuff blocks general attacks, but you don’t actually need to press anything to do this. He takes care of it automatically, so you tend to focus on dodging.

However, the counter attack system is build on this auto block setup and it allows you to negate or significantly reduce damage taken and deliver much more in return. To do this, you need to allow the enemy to land a normal hit and then press Triangle on PS5, and Y on Xbox Series S|X.

There’s a prompt on the screen, but it’s easy to miss this, so just remember to allow the hit and then press Triangle/Y. You’ll see the animation just after that where Cuff sends out the shield to block and then you land the counter attack, which knocks the enemy down, giving you time to get in some free hits.

You can check out the video above to see how to counter attack in slow motion so that you can see everything in a bit more detail. You can also check out the full Recreant Knight boss fight in the video below to see how it’s used to finish off powerful enemies when they go into shield mode.

Precision counter attacks explained

During the tutorial against the Recreant Knight, you will also see it mentions precision counter attacks, which do even more damage and return even more health. It’s worth bearing in mind that you can never get more than the health that you lost back, but you can negate damage using the precision counter approach.

For the most part, it’s a similar story to the normal counter attack, but as the name implies it’s all about timing. You need to hit the Triangle/Y button at just the right time to get it to be precision, but without your own video footage to follow it’s hard to see what this is.

However, you can see it in the slow motion video above a little after the halfway point. In general, what you need to do is to hit the Triangle/Y button fairly early after the attacks lands. The later you leave it, the less health you get back and the less damage you inflict on enemies.

As you play more it’ll start to feel a bit like the perfect parry systems you might be more used to. It doesn’t take too long for the Forspoken counter attack to become second nature and it’ll definitely help you race through the game a little quicker, so well worth the effort.
