How to farm dragons in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

It doesn’t take long to work out that some of the best materials come from the legendary beasts, so here’s how to farm dragons in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom. There are four dragons in total, excluding Gleeoks, which we’re not really counting in the same category.

The process to farm their parts is pretty much the same across the board, but things are very different from the way they were in The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild. This time, it’s not just a case of building a fire and sitting until the next day to get a repeat for each of them.

We’ll start by covering the location for each of the four dragons in TotK before covering a strategy to help you farm their parts better. Finally, we’ll also add in some details on how to make the most out of the situation and game the system a little to give you an abundant supply of materials.

Where to find all of the dragons in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

The best way to get to the dragons in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom is to take to the air via a lookout tower. Things are a little different between the Light Dragon and the others, Farosh, Dinraal and Naydra, so we’ll start there.

The Light Dragon flies quite high up around Hyrule, but the key difference is that she doesn’t ever dip down into one of the chasms, so she’s easier to spot. You should be able to get close enough to glide on over to her from the Hyrule field Skyview Tower or the Lindor’s Brow Skyview Tower.

She’s bright white, so very hard to miss. If you don’t see her, though, when you take to the skies, you can always skip to one of the other dragons to farm. Follow the process that we discuss below and you should be able to make the best use of time and only ever focus on the Light Dragon when she’s approachable from either of these towers.

However, Farosh, Dinraal and Naydra can sometimes be found dipping down a chasm or flying between them in the Depths. Our recommendation is not to bother chasing them when this is the case, because it’s time consuming.

Instead, only get them when they’re either in the sky or halfway in a chasm, because they’re easier to get to with the lift and glider from a tower. In the depths, you’ll need a flying machine to get up to them and this just adds way too much time into the process.

You can find Naydra flying above Necluda and sometimes in the East Hill Chasm and she’ll be in a loop as she goes from the sky, down into the chasm and then through the Depths to come out again to repeat. Use the Sahasra Slope Skyview Tower next to Kakariko Village to get up into the air to spot it.

For Dinraal, you get a similar process, but this time in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom’s Eldin region. Blast off from the Ulri Mountain Skyview Tower or the Thyphlo Ruins Skyview Tower to find Dinraal with it’s fiery flames flying around the north side of Death Mountain.

Finally, there’s Farosh and you can find it flying south of Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower. It will be aiming to fly into the Hills of Baumer Chasm, where it will fly through the Depths before coming out at the East Gerudo Chasm to repeat the run.

How to farm dragons in TotK

In The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, there’s no way to trigger a reset for the drops from any of the dragons. As a result, the process of how to farm their parts is a little different and based on a time loop to wait for it to reset.

The best way to game this is to loop around all of the dragons to far parts from all of them. Star with whichever you need the most and land on it towards the tail. This will allow you to farm the Shards of Spikes that run along it as you sprint to its head.

You’ll then get to choose which part you want and aim for it. If it’s the horn then shoot an arrow at its horn, if it’s the fang you need to hit its teeth, if it’s a scale you hit its body and if it’s the claw then shoot it in any of it’s feet.

Move on to the next and repeat the process and do that for all of the dragons to farm a good supply. By the time you return to the first one again the time loop should have reset and you can go again to build up even more of a stockpile.

This should work out well if you’re farming to upgrade armor like the Fierce Deity Set, which requires parts from all of the dragons. It also means that you’ll have a huge stockpile of Spike Shards, which are very useful. Light Dragon Spike fused to a weapon comes in handy against the Silver Lynel armor in the Arena, and the rest will give you destructive elemental attacks.

Boosting your dragon parts

If you’re not above using the duplication glitch then you can use this to take things to 11 to farm vast supplies of dragon parts. The 1.1.1 methods have now been patched, but there is an approach that still works in version 1.1.2, so you only need one of each part to get the job done.

You can see our guide on how to get duplication to work to find out more about the glitch. You’ll also need a multi-shot bow, so you might want to check out our guide to getting the Majora’s Mask, which will give you five Savage Lynel bows in one master stroke.
