Minions UK release date, trailer and film details

Minions filmBananaz!!! Following the success of both Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2, in which the little yellow henchmen eviled their way into all our hearts, they’ve been given their own spin-off movie in the effortlessly entitled, Minions. They’ve become so popular that they can go it alone and in the upcoming movie it looks like they’re being forced to do just that, but the reality is that every minion is a little unhappy until they they have the perfect despicable super-villain to work for and this time around it’s the nefarious form of Sandra Bullock who they’ll be looking to for their happy hearty do-badding.

Release date

Minions will be getting its UK release date on the 26th June 2015, followed by a general release in the U.S. On the 10th July 2015, coinciding with the different approaches to school holidays in the two countries. It looks like it’s going to be well set up to be a big summer family fun movie release and while the trailer below doesn’t indicate that the visuals will be all that screen popping it’s going to be available to watch in both 2D and 3D.

However, the bigger news is that you’ll also be able watch the movie in the latest cinematic experience innovation technology grand fangled gadgetry thingemy, 4DX. If you’re not familiar with the new development, it adds environmental effects to augment your movie experience including motion seats, wind & rain, fog, lighting and even smells.

The only slight caveat to this for anyone salivating at the prospect in the run-up to the release of the film is that there’s aren’t actually that many cinemas that have 4DX technology as of yet, so you might have to opt for the standard 2D and 3D viewing options. In the UK, there’s only one 4DX cinema as of yet, so if you’ve got to be able to smell the bananaz then you’ll need to get yourself off to Milton Keynes Cineworld to watch Minions.

Storyline

The plot is a clever Minions origins story that charts their history back to the dawn of time as the little boggle eyed yellow freaks crawled out of the biological stew of life way before the dawn of man. While they quickly latched on to the first available baddy they could find – a massive killer T-Rex – their unwitting clumsiness soon put pay to its existence, starting what was to become a long line of similar villain calamities that saw them accidentally do away with the Pharaohs, Dracula and Napoleon.

Despondent and confined to Antarctica to prevent them from wreaking more bad guy havoc, they lose focus until a band of three adventurous Minions decide to head back out into the big bad world to find a new villain to re-ignite their appetite for life. This sees them sailing into New York harbour in 1968 and heading to that year’s villain con only to find themselves under the shadowy pretense of Scarlet Overkill, the supervillain flavour of the month, but will she be the new boss they’ve been hoping for along the way?

Cast

In addition to Sandra Bullock in the role as the evil Scarlett Overkill, the movie also sees co-director Pierre Coffin returning to his voice duties as the Minions, Kevin, Stewart and Bob. John Hamm (Sucker Punch), Alison Janney and Michael Keaton (Birdman) have been cast in the film too, along with Steve Coogan (Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb) and rumours that Jennifer Saunders will be cameoing as Queen Elizabeth II.

Production

Coffin’s co-director is Kyle Balda, who has taken over from Chris Renaud to form a new duo in custody of the yellow tic-tac characters, following on from the two previous movies. Bryan Lynch has written the screenplay and Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy have produced the film.

First impressions

What’s not to like. It looks and sounds hilarious, has a genius storyline of the evil variety, an impressive soundtrack and comes with some genuinely stunning animation. It’s almost worth the effort of trundling all the way over to Milton Keynes when it gets its UK release date to see it in as much glory as possible. We’re always a little dubious about Sandra Bullock movies but because she’s a baddy it’s going to make rooting for the Minions to come out on top even more fun.
