The gig was always going to be a bit rough around the edges, but the addition of a full band to Mr Solo gigs makes his songs stand out a lot better than when he’s playing alone. Although, to contradict that the final track of the night, Kiss It Better from his 2007 EP of the same name, was sang alone on stage and it turned out to be one of the best songs in the set.
Rob from the Voluntary Butler Scheme put in some great drum action, especially on the rolling shake of Blackberries and the slide guitar saxamaphone double-up on Moth in the Flame is nothing short of brilliant. There was some mental maracas from Jimmy Knickers (Simon Stone) and a flash of ukulele freak out from Mr Solo himself.
Moth in the Flame was released in 2012 as a single with Rob and Simon as Mikey Georgeson and the Civilised Scene.
If you’re feeling a bit smashed up with life and you can’t get much of a grip on things, go to a Mr Solo show, it’ll cheer you up a treat. For everybody else, it’ll keep you buoyant for months to come and add in a few pearls of wisdom into the mix.
Mr Solo gig review: 3.7/5
