The Callisto Protocol bosses

The Callisto Protocol bosses

With the launch just in, we know a whole lot more about the The Callisto Protocol bosses. They didn’t really feature in the trailers, which might have made some gamers a little nervous, but they are in there.

Initially, we’d delved deep into the promo and gameplay videos and combined it with developer backgrounds to give you a better view on what to expect. However, with the game now out, we know what we’re playing with a whole lot more.

While there wasn’t much in terms of video footage, there were a few hints that bigger, named enemies will appear in the game. This is nowhere near as significant as the roster of God of War Ragnarok bosses, but there were more than met the eye from the trailers alone.

The story follows prisoner, Jacob lee, who is incarcerated at Black Iron penitentiary, on the Jupiter moon, Callisto, which is named after the Greek nymph of the same name. When his fellow prisoners start to transform into hideous monsters, he manages to get out of his cell in a bid to survive the onslaught in a race for freedom.

If that doesn’t say there’s going to be bosses in The Callisto Protocol we don’t know what does. It looks a bit like The Last of Us in space, which was also light on boss fights, but it definitely had its memorable moments.

If that isn’t enough, it doesn’t take Jacob long to discover that the mutating horde is somehow connected to the warden of the facility. It’s all under the aegis of the United Jupiter Company, which has got shades of Umbrella, so there are bound to be a few dark revelations along the way.

Boss list

There are no name or health bars for The Callisto Protocol bosses, so apologies that we’re naming them ourselves. There are only a handful to cover, but some of them have multiple appearances, which we’ll cover in each below.

Two-headed monster

This thing appears just after the halfway point on the game. There are tricky enemies to fight before it, but none that stand out as bosses as such. It takes a lot of damage and has two phases, which gets progressively difficulty in each appearance.

It crops up on the Platform Ride first, and then it attacks Dani at the Colony, and appears in a server room in the Tower chapter. It’s first appearance is the easiest, as you just need to dodge and shoot before melee attacking when it drops to the ground. After this it’ll tear the dead half of it away and then you’ll be back to dodging and shooting, but aim for the head to speed this up.

When there are more enemies, try to take them out when it’s down or tearing in half, so you don’t have a 2 for 1 situation to deal with. In closer confines, you’ll just need to follow the same tips as above, but with less space to play around with.

Mutant Prison Guard

You fight this big headed beast at the end of Colony and you’ll need to dodge left right left to give you a chance to melee and then shoot when you get the auto aim trigger. Repeat a few times and you’ll be able to escape.

Alpha – The final boss fight

To begin with, the Warden’s Alpha is just a return for the mutated prison guard above, but after you do the same as in the last fight, but with extra dodges for good measure, he goes a bit wrong. He mutates once again into this huge hideous beast beast with a protective shell over its head.

It’s a tough final boss fight and you can see it in all its gory glory with the video above. If you’ve got the alt-fire ammo for the Hand Cannon these will come in handy in finishing off the boss of bosses.

The general gist is to do as much damage as possible when it’s further away and then dodge it’s attacks when it gets close. After a few the protective shell will go and you can get in actual damage on it’s big ugly melon, before it lets out a roar and rebuilds the shield.

At this stage a load of crawling aliens come after you too, but these can be used to fire at Alpha using the GRP function. Having this as much upgraded as possible will help a lot, so you can grab them sequentially and throw them at the final boss.

Run, pick up ammo and health drops to stay int eh fight and cycle rinse repeat to beat it. It’s going to be a much tougher fight if you don’t have many things upgraded, or you didn’t pick up all of the ammo in the blue boxes on the way in. It might be better to revert to a slightly earlier save point to try to get yourself better prepared.

Bosses hinted at in the trailers and gameplay footage

Like we mentioned above, there isn’t a whole lot to imply that there will be a lot of named bosses in The Callisto Protocol. That being said, there are a few key hints to take into account.

Firstly, we know that the monsters, which look like a cross between zombies and alien creatures, are going to mutate as you progress in the game. If that’s at all similar to The Last of Us II then there’s bound to be a few early mutates that have progressed in their evolution a little further.

There’s bound to be at least one of these that will be much bigger and more challenging to take down, similar to the Rat King hospital boss in The Last of Us II. The official website also talks about there being a dark secret below the surface of the planet, so again this is a good hint that there’s going to be a monster beast or two to take down later in the game.

The other side of things is the link to humanity, both in terms of the warden and the United Jupiter Company. While the majority of the video footage on the game focuses heavily on the monsters, there’s bound to be at least one or two crafty individuals to face off against with the warden being a good contender for the final boss in one form or another.

However, the biggest clue in terms of The Callisto Protocol bosses is the presence of robotic tech, which you can see right at the beginning of the official launch trailer below. You can also see the image above for a closer look, but we’re pretty sure that Jacob will have to go toe-to-toe with at least one of these if he’s going to escape from Black Iron prison alive.

In fact you can see a cutscene of him getting punched by one of the robots around the halfway point in the video. Not too long after that there’s a shot of a larger mutant monster dead on a laboratory surface, which adds even more weight to the possibility of big beasts later in the game.

The trailer closes on a boss-like monster with two heads, but equally this could just be a larger standard enemy. There’s definitely enough in the video footage to say that we’ll get at least a few bosses. There are shades of Control to the concept, which also had a few interesting bosses along the way, so things are looking optimistic at the moment.

The Callisto Protocol developer history and bosses

The Callisto Protocol is directed by Glen Schofield, who co-created Dead Space, which has some clear parallels. It also had a number of bosses to fight with names like Tripod, The Leviathan, Hive Mind and the Tormentor, which is yet another good sign for his latest project.

It will be the first game developed by Striking Distance Studios, which Schofield heads up as CEO. His very first game was Barbie Game Girl back in the early 1990s on the Game Boy and even that had bosses, so surely Jacob is going to get tested if Barbie was put through the ringers.

You might also want to check out the video below, The Truth About Black Iron, which focuses on the mystery of the prison and the colony that existed on Callisto before the prison. Like the official launch trailer, it features an interesting beat at the end, which has got big beast boss written all over it.

When the game launches, we’ll update things here to give you more details on The Callisto Protocol boss fights. This will include tips on how to beat them if they’re particularly troublesome.
