Who will be the Super Mario Wonder final boss?

Super Mario Wonder final boss

The trailer might have come and gone for Super Mario Wonder with no official reveal of the final boss, but that doesn’t stop us from taking you through the list of main contenders. There’s at least one hint in the trailer about the final boss and with the upcoming Super Mario Wonder direct on August 31st, 2023, we might get the confirmation that we’re looking for.

The game is going to be the latest side-scroll platform adventure for Mario and the gang and with the success of the movie it could well be one of the biggest releases for Nintendo this year. Nintendo Switch console sales are close to their peak too with more the 100 million units in operation and the next console possibly on the way next year.

This means that there will be a lot of gamers with the console when Super Mario Wonder comes out on October 20th, 2023. It also means that a fair few of them will be coming face-to-face with the final boss either in the run-up to Christmas, over the New Year or in early 2024.

As soon as the game is out, we’ll be adding in more detail on how to defeat the Super Mario Wonder final boss, so don’t forget to head on back. You can check out more of our final boss guides with the tag link at the top of the page.

Obviously, Bowser will be the final boss in Super Mario Wonder

As you’ve no doubt assumed yourself, Bowser is the best bet for the final boss fight in Super Mario Wonder. It hasn’t been confirmed as of yet and there are a few other contenders in the mix, which we’ll discuss below, but everything appears to be pointing to yet another run in with the King of the Koopas.

The biggest point is that Bowser has been the final boss in the vast majority of Mario games with very few exceptions along the way. He kicked things off in the very first game on the NES back in 1987 and he was the final boss in the last new Mario game, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury in 2021.

If that isn’t enough, you can see a strangely demonic Bowser-like figure in the Super Mario Wonder trailer below at the 2 minute mark. It’s purple and it’s got a chomp mask or helmet on that looks very mysterious, so if he is the final boss again it looks like things aren’t going to be as straightforward as usual.

If you look closely at the top of the video during this section, you can also see little Bowser emblems, which adds even more weight to the possibility. If this is anything to go by, it’s possible that Bowser has found a way to duplicate himself with soulless avatars to fight Mario, Luigi and the Princess.

It’s possible that this is linked to the flowers and seeds that were introduced in the trailer, neither of which we’ve seen in the Mario series before. Something is definitely very wrong in the Mushroom Kingdom and if Bowser is indeed behind it all, it makes us wonder what the final boss fight might look like.

It’s clearly going to be a standard 2D side-scroll platform adventure, so that tells us that it’ll be a Bowser confined to the screen size throughout the trailer. However, similar to the way things went down in Bowser’s Fury, it’s also possible that Bowser has gone wrong a bit, so he might have some strange new powers too.

If Mario can literally turn into an elephant, not just look like one with a suit, then who knows what options Bowser might have. You can also see during the Super Mario Wonder trailer that there’s some kind of alternate dimension field around the Bowser-like thing attacking Mario.

He goes on to use this to make Mario small and to grow in size, so we could see some serious space and time bending antics during the final boss fight. Maybe he’ll be able to slow Mario down or teleport him around the place. It’s clearly going to be the most unconventional traditional platform outing for the series.

More options for the Super Mario Wonder final boss

With the main contender covered, there are a few more options for the Super Mario Wonder final boss. A lot of the evidence so far points away from them, but they’re still in with a chance in what looks like it’s going to be a surreal entry in the Mario play book.

Our favorite is Wart, who hasn’t been seen in the series since Super Mario Bros. 2 in the early 1990s. He had a brief cameo in The Legend of Zelda Link’s Awakening, but since then it’s been pretty quiet for the now infamous villain.

With all of the strange goings on in Super Mario Wonder, it’s possible that he’s found a way to bend time and space to his will. The Bowser-ghast in the trailer could be a decoy or maybe Wart’s new powers were first turned on Bowser or the two have joined forces, which would be a lot of fun.

We’re not convinced there’s much chance of the final boss being Wario or Waluigi, although a new Wario Land or World title would definitely be appreciated, if anyone at Nintendo HQ are listening. Bowser Jr. is another low potential contender, along with Cackletta and Antasma from the Mario & Luigi games.

You can also throw Dark Star into the mix, again being a team-up with Bowser who might have found a way to harness its power. It’s a similar story for Megabug from Mario + Rabbids Battle Kingdom, but it’ll be a surprise for the crossover to appear here.

The reality that it’s probably going to be Bowser as the Super Mario Wonder final boss, but we’ll update things here as soon as we know for sure. The Nintendo Direct might give us some more details, so stay tuned for the latest on the game.
