The Twits at the Royal Court Theatre

The Twits Royal Court TheatreIf we’re honest, we’d struggle not to write about anything relating to Roald Dahl, but the prospect of a theatre adaptation of The Twits, coming to the Royal Court Theatre in 2015, is pretty irresistible in its own right. There’s something ingenious about his stories that just seems to work well live on stage and we reckon that the presence of Mr. and Mrs. Twit is going to make for a very impressive theatre production.

The show is scheduled to open in the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs at the Sloan Square venue on the 7th April 2015 with a run through until the 31st May. While it’s clearly pitched as an Easter holiday kids outing, we’d say that there’s probably more big kids out there that will want to see this production have read the book years ago, as it first hit the shelves back in 1980.

For anyone that’s been in a cultural bubble since then, the story gets under the dirty finger-nails, sardines and cornflakes encrusted beard and mono-brow of the eponomous couple, The Twits. This spiteful duo have no love in their life whatsoever, and their hearts are as black as the darkest night as they do everything to niggle at each other and inflict their own nastiness on the world around them. Luckily, they don’t often get things their own way, which will make it all the more fun to watch the stage show as the nasty couple get a zingtingling dose of comeuppance.

Tickets cost between £35 and £12, with under 16’s getting a 50% discount. You can also see the production on a Mondays with all seats costing just £10. Shows run from Monday to Saturday with eventing performances at 7:30pm, Saturday matinees at 2:30pm and mid-week matinees with the following times: Thursday 16th April, 1:30pm; Thursday 23rd April, 1:30pm; Monday 4th May, 2:30pm; Thursday 14th May, 1:30pm; Thursday 21st May, 1:30pm; Thursday 28th May, 2:30pm; and Sunday 31st May at 2:30pm.

John Tiffany (Let The Right One In) will direct the production of Edna Walsh’s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Twits at London’s Royal Court Theatre. It’s not the only time the book has been adapted for the theate, as it was first adapted for the stage in 2007 by David Wood for a production The Dukes in Lancaster, but it’ll be cool to see the undoing of two of the most horrible characters in children’s fiction once again.
