The Mimic Series 2 comes to Channel 4

The Mimic Series 2The Mimic began when writer Matt Morgan saw a Youtube clip of Terry Mynott performing his impressions and he thought, “That’s really good but what next?” That “what next” turned out to be Morgan writing a whole sit-com around Terry’s talent and so the new comedy was created. The good news for fans and comedy lovers is that The Mimic Series 2 is about to air on Channel 4.

In it, we follow Martin (Mynott), an unremarkable man with a remarkable talent of mimicry, as he finds out that he has an 18-year old son, Steven from a previous relationship, while also struggling with the general malaise of being a maintenance guy at a big, soulless business. The pair then attempt to make up for lost time with a lot of the best comedy moments in the first series coming about during their father and son meet-ups in London.

After an impressive debut run, Channel 4 commissioned another six episodes that begins tomorrow (Wednesday the 16th of July), bringing the comedy back for next step in Martin’s mid life crisis. The second series sees him trying to make ends meat now he’s resigned from his maintenance man job to become a professional mimic. However, as his plans of television pseudo-stardom don’t quite work out as well as he’d thought he finds the pinch of making ends meat pushes him to desperation point.

After the HMRC take away his car as payment for back taxes, he agrees to let his hypochondriac friend and newsagent Neil (Neil Maskell – Utopia, Kill List) become his new manager after his son Steven (Jacob Anderson – Game Of Thrones, Broadchurch) leaves to travel the world with friends following the death of his mother.

The second episode sees Martin’s landlady and best friend Jean (Jo Hartley – This Is England, Dead Man’s Shoes), who has now dumped the hapless Neil, sets Martin up with her body language expert, Zumba class pal Harriet (Rebecca Gethings – Extras, The Thick Of It). Things appear to go well as she becomes enamoured with Martin’s vocal talents, especially in the bedroom, but as seems to always be the case for the hero of the show, things don’t always pan out in the end.

The 1st 2 episodes that we’ve seen saw upped the belly laughs from the gentle humour of the 1st series and we’re really looking forward to seeing what happens next to Martin & co. If you haven’t seen The Mimic Series 1 yet, we recommend you try to catch up on 4OD. All 5 of the previous episodes are still available, so you might want to schedule them in to give yourself a clear run at series 2.
