Doctor Who Series 9 teaser trailer and air date confirmed

Jenna Coleman, Doctor Who Series 9While it’s been common knowledge for a while now that Doctor Who Series 9 would be arriving in the UK some time in Autumn 2015, we didn’t know the exact air date. That is until the BBC announced it earlier this week (09/07/15), so now we can confirm 100% that the second series of Peter Capaldi’s tenure in the TARDIS will be back on the Beeb from Saturday 9th September 2015.

Though that’s technically still summer, the lions share of the episodes will be going out throughout autumn and from the look of the teaser video from the BBC below, it could be the best looking series in the history of the show. There’s a lot of talk about it being “time travel on a cinematic scale” and that definitely looks like its going to be the case if the content of the video is anything to go by with some very cool visuals, film style, special effects and set designs.

The new series will see Missy (Michelle Gomez) back on the offensive and she take pride of place in the video, looking every bit the super villain she became in Series 8. However, there’s also a hint that there might be more odd chemistry between her and the Doctor, in spite of her supreme killing streak and none stop, uncaring malevolence, so it’s going to be interesting to see whether or not he does end up kissing her to death. She’ll be kicking things off with the Doctor in the series opener, so we’ll be able to see how this plays out sooner than later.

Series 9 will also introduce Maisie Williams (Game Of Thrones), who features in the latter stages of the teaser trailer, giving us our first glimpse of her in action with Peter Capaldi. There has been speculation about whether or not she’s being brought in as a possible replacement for Jenna Coleman, who will be back as Clara once again in Series 9 following a pretty rough time of things in the last series, but with the dialogue in the video below it’s hard to see it right now.

However, you never know with Doctor Who, but the cryptic comments – “You?”, “What took you so long old man” – are going to leave a lot of us second guessing what to make of it. Let us know what your take is in the comments below, but she’s either a new incarnation of Clara, a long missing Time Lord from the Doctor’s past, a young River or a new villain that hasn’t shown her face in a long time. Either way it’s shaping up to be a pretty exciting development.

We’ve scoured the teaser trailer from top to bottom, but we can’t see Rufus Hound anywhere, so we’ll have to wait for the series to air to see how he’s going to enter the fray. We do know that the series will see the Doctor and Clara travel to dangerous alien planets, sinister underwater installations, a Viking village, Dalek metropolis, and the very end of time itself, so there are a lot of possibilities for the comedian to surface. They’ll also have to stare down a global Zygon uprising, alien dens, killer mercenaries called the Mire, frightening ghosts and of course Missy herself, so they’ll have their work cut out for them.
