The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Hylian Shield location, how to repair it and get a replacement

The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Hylian Shield location, how to repair & what to do if it breaks

In The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, the Hylian Shield location is a powerful weapon in the fight against Ganondorf, so here’s where to find it, how to repair it and how to get a replacement. We’ll also cover some of the Hylian Shield secrets that you might not be aware of to give you a rounded view of how to get the most out of it.

In The Legend of Zelda TotK, there are plenty of defensive options that you have, ranging from the best armor sets to strong shield fuses and defence up meals and elixirs. However, none of them look anywhere near as cool as the Hylian Shield and it’s the strongest in the game at base level, so definitely one to get.

The location is easy to find and you can pick it up as soon as you touch down on Hyrulian soil after The Great Sky Island. However, the Hylian Shield doesn’t auto-regenerate like the Master Sword. It has very strong durability, but you can break it eventually.

The good news, though, is that there two important mechanics in TotK that mean that you’ll be able to repair the shield when it starts to break and get a new one if you’ve accidentally broken it. Again, both of these are pretty easy to do, so you’ll be able to rock the classic Hylian Shield, Champion’s Tunic and Master Sword look for the rest of your playthrough.

The Hylian Shield location – Where to find the best shield in TotK?

The Hylian Shield location is conveniently located to the north west of Hyrul Castle, but you don’t need to make it all of the way up to the castle itself, you just need to head to the north west on the moat. The good news is that you get sent close to the location by Purah when you first get down to Lookout Landing from the Great Sky Island.

If you follow the structure around to the north west after you speak to the commander and look down on the moat you should see a large cave mouth heading back under the castle. This is where you’ll find the Hylian Shield and if you’ve done a lot of exploring already and you have the stamina wheels then you simply use the glider to get into it.

However, if you’re early on then you might need to make a power boat to get into the cave itself. What you’re looking for is a giant shield carving on the wall at the back of the cave and to get the Hylian Shield, you just need to climb up the wall and light the brazier at the top and a chest will rise up to give you it a bit like the Champion’s Tunic in the throne room.

How to repair the Hylian Shield?

Just like all of your kit in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, you can get it repaired and back to new using an Octorok. Simply drop it in front of one and wait for it to hoover it up and when it spits it back out your Hylian Shield with have its usual durability back.

You can repeat this process forever, so you just need to have a good location to find an Octorok any time you need one. The best region to look for them is Eldin and there’s a large number of them around Death Mountain.

There’s a shine at the top next to the point where you fight Moragia, so you can use this as your starting point. From here, head to the north east of the chasm and use the glider to drop down level by level.

As you’re descending you should get attacked by an Octorok or two, and you can then keep coming back here every time you need to repair the Hylian Shield in TotK. There are plenty more in Eldin, so a little exploration should give you a few options.

How to get a Hylian Shield replacement

If you didn’t know how to repair the Hylain Shield in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom and you’ve managed to break it, don’t worry too much, because there’s a way to get a replacement. It’s expensive, though, so your best bet is to repair it with an Octorok using the method above after you get it back the first time.

If yours breaks then the location to aim for is Hateno Village in the south east of Hyrule and if you talk to Dede in her shop, you’ll be given a series of quests to complete. Follow this process through, which will include the vote for the new mayor of the village.

Once you’ve done this, you can then return to the shop to talk to Dede, who will tell you about rare items that she has. These will be a collection of weapons, armor and shield that you’ve owned previously, so if you’ve had the Hylian Shield and it broke you’ll find it in the list.

The Hylian Shield replacement costs 3000 rupees to buy it, but this is the only way to get it back, so you’ll just need to knuckle down and get the funds. You can use the duplication glitch along with our guide on where to find diamonds to give you a relatively easy run to boosting your rupees to buy the Hylian Shield.

Hylian Shield secrets

The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom has a lot of secrets and mechanics it doesn’t really tell you about. That’s sort of the case with the Hylian Shield, which comes with an extra benefit that can be rotated, so you can choose the one that works the best for you.

To do this, you just need to turn to TotK’s best blacksmith option… no, not the Cobble Crusher fixer in Goron City, but the Octorok. Remember to save your game before you feed your Hylian Shield to one of them and then you can see what you get as a benefit when it sucks it up, does its repair job and spits it back out to you.

If you like the benefit then you can stick with that, but if not then you can just reload your save point and repeat the process. When you get the one you want you can carry on with your monster crushing business.

The other tip to keep in mind is that just because the shield looks amazing just the way it is, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t augment by Fusing materials to it. You can still add a Puffshroom to get smokescreen to disappear in when you get hit, or a bomb flower to shield surf jump on to get height.

You can Fuse a rock to it for extra defense or a cannon for a little more attack. The point is that the Hylian Shield is the same as the rest of the shields in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, so don’t miss out on the opportunities to use it to the max.
