Help save Brazilian rainforest law

Brazilian deforestationLast year we wrote about the possibility of Brazil’s Forest Law swinging in the favour of agribusiness and landowner deforestation. As time has passed the situation has gotten increasingly dire, so here’s a chance for you to do something to help put pressure on Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff to veto the changes.

A petition has been set up by Avaaz to raise 1.5 million signatures to levy at the Brazilian Forest Law proposal, and hopefully do enough to stop it in its tracks. Follow the link to sign the petition – https://www.avaaz.org/en/save_the_amazon_a/?cl=1232804669&v=9991.

With reports from the BBC indicating that deforestation of the rainforests of Brazil has in creased by a factor of six (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-13449792), it’s obvious that it’s increasingly important to support a veto to the law proposals.

The current regulations insist that 80% of a landowners property remain as rainforest, but the new law could see that figure reduced. Though that percentage might sound high, the reality is that just small percentage changes in deforestation adds up to square miles of frost destruction.
