Hogwarts Legacy final boss fight guide – How to defeat Ranrok

Hogwarts Legacy final boss fight guide - How to defeat Ranrok

With the release in the bag, here are all of the details for the Hogwarts Legacy final boss fight and how to beat it. We’ve updated the guide with details on how to defeat Ranrok (not to be confused with Ragnarok, by-the way, the Norse armageddon, but the parallels are definitely there), so we’ll take you through the tips you need to get the job done.

Developed by Avalanche Software, Hogwarts Legacy takes us back to the 20th Century and throws you into the school of witchcraft and wizardry as a 5th year student just arriving. This means you’ve got a lot of catching up to do before you can come face to face with the game’s final boss.

When we initially looked at all of the video footage of the game, there were at least 3 key suspects that could well have gone on to be the ultimate villain. We’ll cover these in the sections towards the bottom of our guide, but we’ll start off with who the final boss fight is against and how to defeat it.

It was possible that Avalanche might be secretly saving the true villain for a big reveal in the post game of Hogwards Legacy. While that didn’t turn out to be the case, we’ll take you through some wild theories for this at the bottom of the page and how it could have linked into the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts stories.

Who is the Hogwarts Legacy final boss fight?

If you don’t want any spoilers on how the final boss fight goes down in Hogwarts Legacy then now is the time to bug out. For everyone else, we’ll continue below to give the pure-blood fanatics a chance to do a runner.

The story centers on a Goblin rebellion led by Ranrok and while he’s got support from a local villain called Victor Rookwood, it’s Ranrok that turns out to be the main villain. His is not a moral battle, but a full on takeover. He doesn’t just want to improve things for the Goblins, he wants to overthrow the witch and wizard world and take over all of the magic. As mentioned above, there are definite parallels with Ragnarok conceptually, but the name is slightly different.

His plan is to use a repository of ancient magic previously collected and stored by wayward former Hogwarts professor Isidora Morganach. He eventually gets his hands on that power and it transforms him into the Ranrok Dragon, which is the Main Quest final boss fight in the game.

How to beat the final boss, Ranrok Dragon?

You can watch the video below to see the final boss fight in all its glory for more of a visual guide on how to beat it, but in general it’s all about speed and precision. Fast dodge rolls will keep you away from most of the damage and then using the right magic on the charge orbs based on the color will open up Ranrok Dragon to damage and help you defeat it.

Ancient Magic will do the biggest impact on its health bar, so having this upgraded to the max will help. You’ll need to make it through five phases to defeat the final boss. You can also throw back some of its projectiles and once it’s defenses are down you can try the block counter on the other projectiles to give you an opening.

Edurus Potions will give you a thicker skin for the crunch final phases if you need it and then health potions to keep you in the fight. Dodge roll on rails, especially in the final phase of the battle, and you should be able to make it through. Stay back to avoid it’s fire breath and wave attacks and you’re golden.

Hogwarts Legacy villains and final boss fight hints

First on the list is the two obvious villains that had featured in the Hogwarts Legacy videos right from the very beginning. The story involves a goblin rebellion led by Ranrok and the tightening noose of dark wizards surrounding the school led by Victor Rookwood.

Either one of these could have gone on to be the final boss, as they were being teased as the game’s main antagonists. However, when it comes to the Wizarding World not everything is always as it appears. We already know that there’s at least a tenuous alliance between them, which hinted at a deeper plot than we know.

You’ve only got to look at Professor Quirrell in The Philosopher’s Stone, who went on to have Lord Voldemort sandwiched onto the back of his noggin, to see that looks can be deceiving. It was a similar story in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them where Graves turned out to be Gellert Grindalwald.

History could easily have been repeated in Hogwarts Legacy and either Ranrok or Rookwood could turn out to be much more than they seem to be. Misdirection has been a key plot device throughout the books and films in both series, so it makes sense to be a big part of the game too.

That leads things perfectly to the last possible villain that has featured in the videos for Hogwarts Legacy, headmaster, Phineas Nigellus Black. He’s played by Simon Pegg, who describes his as a self-absorbed head of the school with little care for the students.

With such a big name cast as the character, it would be a waste to not make him critically important to the plot. We already know that Black is the least-liked headmaster in the history of Hogwarts, so it makes sense that he might actually be the main villain in Legacy, making him a prime contender for the final boss fight.

Obviously, he’s related the Sirius Black, who’s family has a fairly dark history with cousins including Bellatrix Lestrange and Narcissa Malfoy. That should give you enough to add to the Pure Blood-focused lineage leading back to Phinneas and his potential to be the final boss.

More Wizarding World final boss contenders for Hogwarts Legacy

In addition to the three characters mentioned above, it was also possible that another villain was behind everything that happens. Either Ranrok or Victor Rookwood were clever disguises for a more malevolent force, or they’re secretly being controlled by another, more powerful party. This turns out not to be the case, but you can read more of our initial theory below.

This could easily have been Phinneas Black with his checkered past and Simon Pegg star power, but it could also be someone else. You may think that with most of the baddies from the books are out of the equation with the timeline being before both Gellert Grindalwald and Lord Voldemort. However, there are more that predate these and they’re all sort of linked with the unfortunate matchmaking that plagued the pure blood families.

The most prominent of these is the Gaunt family, which is the familial line that links Lord Voldemort with his ancestor Salazar Slitherin. By the time Tom Riddle showed up at Hogwarts his family had lost all of its position and power, but back in the 1900s it’s possible that they were desperately clutching onto it.

If that’s the case then they could have a hand in the dastardly plans surrounding the story of Hogwarts Legacy. One possible name that could be in the mix is Marvolo Gaunt, the V man’s grandfather. He would have been around at the time the plot takes place, so this is another option for the final boss.

Obviously, another option is the Malfoy family, and there’s also the werewolf ancestors of Fenrir Greyback to take into account. After that there are the Lestrages, but none are these are in the same league as the Gaunts, so Marvolo or an older relative is the best bet.
