God of War Ragnarok final boss options

There’s still a little while to go until God of War Ragnarok comes out, but here’s our take on the final boss and what it might mean for the future of the series. It’ll be the culmination of the Norse Saga for Kratos and his son Atreus, so it’ll need to draw things to a close in the cold of Thimblewinter, while also possibly teasing at least something about what comes next.

There’s a lot of speculation about the possibility of Egypt being the next destination for the father and “BOY” duo because of Angrbodr’s origins, which appear to be more distant than in the original Norse mythology. However, other locations could be possible with South America or Japan being strong contenders.

By the time they defeat the final boss in God of War Ragnarok, Kratos will have completely wiped out two pantheons of gods, which is bound to have its ramifications. Other pantheons may start to get the sense that they could be next and opt for a first strike strategy. Alternatively, Odin might form an alliance to protect him against Ragnarok, which could then spill out into a potential sequel.

However, having too much emphasis on the aftermath of the game would take away from the focus on the core story of Kratos and Atreus weathering the storm of Asgardian might. It’s a fine line to tread, but we’re hoping there’s going to be at least a little teaser for the next installment in the series.

God of War has never been as popular as it is now, so it’ll be surprising if there isn’t a sequel in the next four to five years. This means that either there will be a teaser during the final boss fight, some secret ending like the Thor reveal or they’re going to keep quiet about things for now and reveal something outside of Ragnarok.

Who will be the final boss in God of War Ragnarok

If you think about it logically, there are only a few options for the God of War Ragnarok final boss fight. We know that Thor and Freya are going to be the main antagonists in the game, but Odin is also in the frame as he has been pulling the strings all along.

Its easy to think that Baldur was the final boss for God of War (2018), but in all actuality it was a combination of him and his mother Freya, who controlled vines to stop the fight. She then went on to show her full power by re-animating the dead giant Thamur to intervene in the fight, which was pretty impressive.

Freya is clearly out for vengeance following the death of Baldur, but the question is whether or not her anger will hold all the way to the end of the game. It’s possible that she will have a mid-point story arc and boss fight that will see her coping with her grief and deciding to help Kratos and Atreas deal with Thor and Odin.

If that’s the case then it seems likely that either one of these Aesir gods will be the final boss. However, our preference would be for a late game fight with Thor that would then set things up for a final battle with the power and cunning of Odin, which is a fairly logical progression.

Santa Monica Studios rarely play by the book, though, so its entirely possible that we’ll get something less direct. One of the more obvious options is for an alliance between Odin and Sutr with the latter leading the fray for the final boss fight and Odin firing in from the sidelines.

If you want to look further afield, there’s also an outside chance of another deity joining the fight at the end of Ragnarok. This could either be a spirit or resurrected god from the Greek pantheon or another alliance like Ra from Egyptian mythology.

This is where the link to a sequel could come in giving us the completion of the Norse Saga and an instant route into the next chapter for the God of War franchise. With the addition of the world travelling god Tyr into the mix for Ragnarok, that might open up even more realms with other pantheons for the next piece of the Kratos puzzle.
