In Time (2011)

In Time film 2011, starring Justin Timberlake

In Time hit the cinemas on the 28th October 2011 and built on a cool trailer to be a pretty decent sci-fi action thriller. Written, directed and produced by Andrew Niccol, whose previous work includes Gattaca and The Truman show, it combines the claustrophobic feeling of being hemmed in with paranoia and a futuristic distopian reality which Niccol has become known for.

Starring Justin Timberlake (Bad Teacher), who looks convincing (i.e. you don’t keep expecting him to break out into a funked up dance to the tune of Sexy Back), and Cillian Murphy (the Scarecrow, Batman Begins), In Time is set in an imagined 2169 where people need to buy time to stay alive. Though the concept seems a little flawed in the outset, it appears to work well as an action packed thrill ride.

Will Salas (Timberlake) is struggling to make up more time, but when he’s given more than he could ever need the system turns on him and he is forced to go on the run with a high stake hostage. Bizarrely, Rachel Wilde of Tron Legacy fame plays Salas’ mum, Rachel, in the film, but with Timekeeper, Raymond Leon (Murphy), on his heels, he goes on his own rampage with the daughter of a time rich millionaire, Sylvia (Amanda Seyfried – Epic), in tow.

Johnny Galecki (The Big Bang Theory) also stars in the movie along with Yaya Alafia (she was in America’s Next Top Model once, but also co-starred alongside Wilde in Tron Legacy), Tom Hemingway (Black Swan) and Russian model Sasha Pivovarova.

Thankfully, In Time doesn’t appear to overdo the critique on our time stretched modern existence, but instead focuses on a new way to highlight the money divide of the wealthy and the poor. Delivering a slick, high octane distopian adventure that’s stylistically sharp, high speed and packed with convincing performances, In Time was a stand-out sci-fi flick in 2011.
