Splatoon 3 story mode

Splatoon 3 story mode

With the recent release of Splatoon 3, here are all of the details on the story mode. The campaign is called The Return of the Mammalians, and the Octarians have got some seriously hairy tentacles now, so things are a little bit different for the third big splat story.

If you’ve seen the latest Splatoon 3 trailer and videos then you will have seen that DJ Octavio is going to be back in mix in the single player campaign. However, the name and the hairy tentacles are enough of a clue to indicate that there’s more to the mode than just another blast battle with the Octarians.

He isn’t hairy in any of the shots, so there was still a little room for speculation on the matter prior to the release. However, the recent leaks for the story mode gave the game away slightly, but it’s sort of history now that the game is out.

How to start the Splatoon 3 story mode

Now that the game is available, you’ll be able to begin the Splatoon 3 campaign as soon as you fire it up. You won’t have too far to look for the entry point to the story mode, because it’s pretty much right next to where you begin in Splatsville whenever you start the game.

You need to keep an eye out for the old guy peaking out of the manhole to the left of the stairs leading up to the multiplayer lobby doors. Ink on over there and drop down the manhole to start the story mode by changing to Squid form.

If you’ve played the previous games then you’ll know that the aged fellow is Captain Craig Cuttlefish. He’s an old ink veteran and acts as your guide once again in the campaign mode, having done the job in the first Splatoon and then again (sort of) in the Octo Expansion for the second game.

Once you drop down the manhole, Tripple C will give you a briefing on what you need to do. He may not punch as well as Triple G, but he’ll give you some useful advice for each of the mode’s levels and boss fights.

What is the story mode about?

In the Splatoon 3 story mode you play as Agent 3, who is referred to as the “newest recruit of the Squidbeak Splatoon”. It’s a new Agent 3, though, and not the same dude that appeared in the Octo Expansion story.

You’ve been sent to the home of the Octarians to battle it out with the enemy army, who have become a whole lot hairier than before. It’s once again to do with the Great Zapfish, which DJ Octavio – leader of the Octarians – is always trying to steal.

The new Idols, Deep Cut, will also feature in the story, so expect to see the dubious faces of Shiver, Frye and Big Man. You’ll also have a diminutive side kick buddy called Smallfry, who will help you activate splat lines from afar in the levels.

Story mode plot

Ahead of the release of Splatoon 3 there were a number of leaks about the story mode plot. What this means is that a lot more details had become common knowledge prior to the game coming out, but now that it’s available, here’s what went down.

Obviously, this is going to contain a few spoilers, so if you don’t want to find out too much more about the campaign story then now’s the time to stop reading and check out our computer games section to keep tabs on less spoilery aspects of the game. For everyone else, there were already plenty of clues about the story mode with the title for the campaign. In the history of Splatoon games there has only ever been one mammal of any real note, so you should expect him to be a big part of the action as well as being the final boss fight.

Mr. Grizz is a grizzly bear that talked to players through a microphone on a bear statue during Salmon Runs in Splatoon 2. He’s the boss of Grizz Co., so he’s a formidable opponent to take on, but you can get some pointers in the right direction with the video below.

The other thing to take into account is the arch nature of the Idols, Deep Cut. The band looks a whole lot more nefarious than the previous incumbents, so they’re on the darker side of the ink-spectrum too.

We’d had a number of comments about the leaks and one referred to Big Man’s boss fight with links to the Manta boss in Super Mario Sunshine. It sounds like the Splatoon 3 story mode is going to be off the hook and if anything the leaks have got us even more excited about the campaign.
