What will be the next Star Wars series on Disney Plus

With not even a whisper about a film, the only thing we have to look forward to is the next Star Wars series on Disney Plus. If you’re not sure what it will be, we’ll take you through the details for the very next Star Wars series, which will be Ahsoka, as well as the full line up after that.

The Disney Plus series began in 2019 with The Mandalorian, which set a new standard for Star Wars as a TV show. It followed that up with an even more impressive season 2 next in 2020, which introduced Ahsoka Tano and a de-aged Luke Skywalker into the mix.

Since then, we’ve only had The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi and a third season of The Mandalorian in terms of live action, but Disney Plus has been pretty busy with animation too. We’ll also cover what the next big animated Star Wars series will be on the platform, following up on the success of The Clone Wars, The Bad Batch and Tales of the Jedi.

Ahsoka will be the next Star Wars Series on Disney Plus

The next Star Wars Series to come to Disney Plus will be Ahsoka, which is a spin-off from The Mandalorian, the Clone Wars animated series and it’s successor Rebels. It sees Rosario Dawson returning as the former Jedi Ahsoka Tano, who was Anekin SKywalker’s Padawan before he turned to the dark side in Star Wars Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.

If you haven’t seen any of the animated series yet, you might want to try to cram them in before Ahsoka arrives on Disney Plus on August 23rd, 2023. It’s a similar story for The Mandalorian Season 2 and The Book of Boba Fett, which featured the Jedi a lot.

It’ll take place in a timeline similar to the other live action series on the platform, but we’re expecting it to jump around a little. This should cover some of the back story for Ahsoka since Rebels, what she’s been doing since The Mandalorian and what she’s doing to take the fight to the remnants of the Empire.

We know that she’s heavily linked to Luke Skywalker having seen her helping him as he trained Grogu during the events of The Book of Boba Fett. It’s going to be interesting to see how or if this fits into the next Star Wars Series, but the revelations during The Mandalorian Season 3 seem to imply that she might be busy with other missions.

There’s been a lot of talk about the possible return of Grand Admiral Thrawn, who Ahsoka faced off against in Rebels. If that isn’t enough, there was also a number of mentions for something called Project Necromancer.

Details are still thin on the ground in terms of what this might be, but it definitely sounds pretty menacing. You can read more about it with the link below, but Thrawn and Project Necromancer weren’t the only loose ends left without a thread at the end of The Mandalorian Season 3.

We also had Doctor Pershing and his “treatment” on the the Mind Flayer, so this is something that could be picked up in Ahsoka. It’s also possible that the intention was just to wipe his memories, so there’s no way to trace his activities to the Shadow Council or it’s a story that will continue with Season 4 of the show.

We’ll keep you posted on any developments, but Ahsoka isn’t the only Star Wars series coming to Disney Plus in 2023. You can read more about what will be coming next in the sections below to get the full picture of what to expect.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew will be the next series after Ahsoka

Announced at the Star Wars Celebration 2022, the next show up for Disney Plus after Ahsoka will be Skeleton Crew. It’s due to arrive on the streaming platform some time later in 2023, so we’re expecting this to get a release in time for the winter holidays.

It’s about a group of kids that accidentally get lost in the Star Wars galaxy. The story is about them trying to find a way home to their tiny little planet, and it stars Jude Law. We’re expecting him to help them on their quest to get home, but the announcement hinted at it being dark, so maybe with Stranger Things vibes.

It’s set in a similar post-Return of the Jedi time frame as The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka. We’re not really expecting a great deal of crossover from the other series, but you never know.

Are there more Disney Plus Star Wars series on the way?

Next up after Star Wars: Skeleton Crew we’ve got another big series planned for Disney Plus in 2024. At the 2023 Celebration, we had The Acolyte confirmed, which will be set years before everything that we’ve seen so far, taking us back to the High Republic era of the franchise.

It stars Amandla Stenberg as a young Jedi and it’s described as a cross between Frozen and Kill Bill. Her character was addressed as Your Majesty by the host of the panel at the Star Wars Celebration, so clearly she’s a princess or queen, while also doing a lot of Bruce Lee moves to take out the enemies in the process.

If that isn’t enough, there will also be a fourth season of The Mandalorian and Andor Season 2, with the latter being possible for 2024 too. Mando 4 will probably be 2025 with Season 3 only recently finished on Disney Plus.

What will be the next animated Star Wars Series

In addition to the new live action series mentioned above, there’s also going to be some new seasons for existing Star Wars animated shows on Disney Plus. We’ve just had Visions Season 2 in May and then we’ve got a third season of The Bad Batch and Tales of the Jedi Season 2 coming up next in 2024.

We didn’t get any brand new shows announced at the Star Wars Celebration 2023, but we’re expecting big things next year. We’d love to see a Luke Skywalker animated series in the aftermath of the destruction of the Empire, but that’s definitely a shot in the dark.
