Star Trek Into Darkness trailer and release date

Star Trek Into DarknessBenedict Cumberbatch looks like he’s going to steal the show in the upcoming new Star Trek movie, Into Darkeness. Looking as mean as Stephen Dorff in Blade and delivering lines as icily as Alan Rickman in Die Hard, his character gives the trailer the dark heart it has.

Playing one of Star Fleet’s top agents, it looks like his character betrays earth becoming an intergalactic planetary terrorist, destroying the Fleet’s base and leaving widespread fear in his wake. Que Chris Pine as James T. Kirk and the majority of the rest of the Enterprise crew from the 2009 remake of Star Trek who fire up the warp drive and take to the stars in pursuit of the new super villain.

Though they don’t seem to feature much in the trailer, Zachery Quinto (Heroes) returns as Spock, Karl Urban is back as Bones, John Cho as Zulu, Zoe Saldana (Avatar) as Uhura, Anton Yelchin as Chekov and Simon Pegg (The World’s End) takes on the role of Scotty once again. Newcomer to the Star Trek cast is Alice Eve (Men in Black III) who is set to play Dr. Carol Marcus, who previously featured in the second of the original films, Wrath of Khan, as the mother of Kirk’s son, David, so maybe she’ll be his love interest in Into Darkness.

The movie is set for release on the 17th May 2013, which doesn’t give you all that much time to get a suitable Star Trek costume ready in time for the premier. However, if the first scenes featuring Cumberbatch in the trailer are anything to go by, it’ll be well worth the effort.

With a much darker plot and what looks like a brilliant performance from Cumberbatch, this could be the return to form that the Star Trek legacy deserves. Directed by J.J. Abrams once again there will definitely be a continuation of themes from the first movie, including Kirk’s rash attitude to space ship Captaincy, but the first impressions give a lot of hope for a film that would stack up to Gene Roddenbery’s boldly going TV and movie series.
