We got distracted back in Spring with the redesign of the website and the ongoing migration of old pages to the new layout. In the crush of it all we inevitably missed out on talking about a few gems that were released during that time and one of them was Tennis’ most recent single release, My Better Self.
The vocals are husky and crisp in one breath and the music is a brilliant throwback to late 50s and early 60s American girl group styles. It’s played up with louder than usual drums that give the song a touch of modernity along with the electro synth organ, underpinned with a classic bass line and melody.
The video is just as stylish and steeped in retro pull-outs, with a vague trace of self deprecation and hints of a more complex, intelligent storyline. Alaina Moore’s dance routine is surprisingly good and whoever put together the outfits is a legend.
Tennis’ My Better Self was released on the 28th May 2012 as a double A side with Petition. It’s available on 7″ single, digital download, and on their second album, Young and Old.
