How many chapters are there?

In total there are seven chapters in The Callisto Protocol, staring out with the very first, which is called Cargo if you missed it. You can see all of the chapters listed out below with an average runtime for each to give you an idea about how long it’s going to take you to complete it.

You can also watch full walkthrough video for all of them if you want to see where you are. There’s no map in The Callisto Protocol, so its easy to get disorientated. Watching the videos should help you to be able to see where you are within each of the seven chapters.

This is taken from our own estimates, not the developers, so it’s based more on an element of getting lost or stuck, as opposed to following the right path right the way through. You can also find out where you are in the chapter with the details below each and get a glimpse of what else you need to swathe through to get to the end.

Chapter 1: Cargo – 53 minutes

The Callisto Protocol kicks off with you crash landing on the Jupiter moon as you’re delivering medical supplies. Your ship gets boarded by Dani and you both get locked up in prison, while Jacob’s co-pilot dies in the crash. When you wake up in your cell, you’ve got an implant in your neck and there’s some kind of crazy outbreak going on.

It turns out to be a alien mutant zombie thing and you find a fellow prisoner called Elias, who says he can help. You break him out and then use an elevator to get to the tower, but it goes down, so you have to fight your way through a horde of enemies in Solitary.

You’ll have some Security Unit robots to sneak past and some crawl vents to get through before eventually getting back up to the right levels to make it to the watch tower.

However, you get found by the guard that brought you in from the crash, which ends with Jacob letting in the infected to take him down.

Chapter 2: Aftermath – 1 hour 15 minutes

The second of The Callisto Protocols’ chapters see you meeting back up with Elias who has a plan, so you follow him. The general gist is that they need a hacker to get into the network to give them a chance of getting a ship for Jacob to fly them all off Callisto.

However, Jacob needs to get access to get in, so he has to go a different way, but yet another elevator problem sends him back down. This takes him through the medical center and then out the back exit. Once you make it through that, Elias sends you over to the Secure Housing Unit (SHU) to break the hacker out.

You then have to fight your way through maximum security only to find that the prisoner you’re looking for is Dani, who gets the drop on Jacob and leaves him stranded in her cell, which she does a runner. You then have to wait for the cell system to get out and you’ll need to get to the Tram Station to try to meet back up with Elias, shooting a Security Unit robot in the head and working out a trap to get through the chapter.

Chapter 3: Habitat – 1 hour 30 minutes

The Callisto Protocol gets pretty brutal for the third of the chapters with Jacob having to get through the sewers to make it to a Habitat dome. There’s a crazy sewer ride along the way, but you’ll eventually come out in the dome, which has got more treats for you, along with some new sneaky enemies to face.

Once you get the code from the guard, you’ll need to make it to the utility hatch, where you’ll eventually meet up with Elias again. However, just as you think you’re home dry, the guard from before is back and he looks like he’s turning zombie, but in his own unique way. He blast you out of an airlock to complete Habitat.

Chapter 4: Lost – 1 hour 15 minutes

Lost is pretty cool as you’ve got a protective suit and there’s a huge storm roaring about you outside. You just about get your helmet on right and then set off to find Elias, but he dies from the impact, having flown further than Jacob. Dani shows up at the same time and takes his implant to get the data that he has.

You then go on to meet up with her and work together to escape after you get the codes to trigger all of the security protocols to get out of the area. Dani takes a detour to Jacob’s crashed ship and discovers a hidden compartment under the medical supplies, which Jacob is surprised by.

They then head to the hanger to get off Callisto, but the Warden cuts them off, destroys their escape ship and leaves them falling to their doom.

Chapter 5: Below – 1 hour 35 minutes

The Callisto Protocol midpoint is where you find out that there’s more to the moon than just the prison. You find a transport system for the old colony that came before it and you need to find a way to meet up again after yet another drop separates you.

Here’s where stealth comes in for the sightless alien zombies and you’ll need to get the power back on a platform ride to make it to the colony. This triggers a sequence where you’ll have a wave a zombies before a boss fight with a two headed monster.

Chapter 6: Colony – 1 hour 5 minutes

Once you get to the end of the platform ride, you’ll then make it to the Colony, and then you’ll need to make it up the various levels to meet up with Dani. However, there’s another fall when you get to the top where Dani has found out that another outbreak on the location 75 years ago is where it all began.

You’ll then have another two-headed boss fight with some extra shamblers for good measure before another fall and eventually meeting up with Dani. You then get through to to a medical facility where you find out that a massive alien’s parasites is where the outbreak comes from.

The prison is just being used to provide test subjects for Dr. Mahler in a bid to create a super human from the infection. It all comes to a head with a fight against the now mutated guard, who is the super soldier they were hoping to create.

Once you beat him, Dani is infected and you race to find a solution, but soon after that you’re caught by Security Unit robots and thrown back into Black Iron Prison.

Chapter 7: Tower – 1 hour five minutes

Doctor Mahler helps break Jacob out and gives him instructions to find her and Dani, who she’s treating. It’s a tough fight along the way, which is as you’d expect considering this is the last of The Callisto Protocol’s chapters.

Once you get there, she gives you an antidote synthesis syringe, but to complete it you need to get a sample from the Alpha test subject, AKA the mutated guard. You and Dani then head out to take on the final confrontations with Cole, who is behind the mass outbreak plan.

He throws in his Alpha for you to fight, who quickly transforms into an absolute beast of a creature, which is the final boss fight. You’ll need some decent upgrades on the GRP and hand cannon to make it through.

Chapters ranked:

  1. Lost – the 4th chapter is incredibly atmospheric with the storm raging and Dani shouting at you. Definitely worth replaying.
  2. Below – the second best chapter is the very next one, Below. The atmosphere is also pretty cool with the nerve jangling sightless zombies and the crazy two headed boss.
  3. Cargo – next up is the very first chapter in Callisto Protocol, which is a pretty savage introduction to the game. It’s a baptism of fire, blood and gore.
  4. Tower – the final chapter is decent, but it really should have been the highest on our list of chapter ranked. The fact that it’s not shows that there was some room for improvement.
  5. Colony – with the truth about the facility you then need to make it through the old colony and it’s got another big two-headed shambler boss with added enemies.
  6. Aftermath – the second chapter continues well enough, but it doesn’t have that much to make it stand out compared to the others.
  7. Habitat – the third chapter looks impressive, but it’s just a bit all over the place in terms of structure, so it’s ranked 7th in our list.

The Callisto Protocol length

A you can see from the chapter notes above, you can make it through The Callisto Protocol in eight and a half hours if you know exactly where you’re going. However, there are a number of tricky sections to make it through in terms of puzzles, routes and enemies. When you take these into account, you get to the ten to twelve hours of gameplay above.

However, if you crank things up to maximum difficulty then this will inevitably be higher, but you’ll have a lot more deaths to frustrate you along the way, especially against the final boss. It’s a shame there’s no chapter selection when you complete the game, which means if you want to go back and do anything again, you’ll have to rely on any manual save points you have, or just start from the beginning.

There’s also no New Game+ as of yet, but hopefully both chapter selection and New Game+ will be features added at a later stage. This would give the game a big boost in replay time to add to the incredibly visceral action and story for The Callisto Protocol.
