The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom how to get past the sand storm

The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom how to get past the sand storm

When you start to make your way to Gerudo Town in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom you have to work out a way to get past the sand storm in the desert. It has created a veil of obscurity that makes it difficult to see where you’re going and it messes up the map, so it’s easy to get lost on the way.

It’s the start of the Gerudo Town Regional Phenomena and if you’re anything like us then you’ve probably save this one for last. It’s the toughest of the four with the challenge of the desert heat and then the sand storm blocking the way being just the start of things.

If that isn’t enough, when you do make it to Gerudo Town it’s abandoned due to the sand storm, so you’ll need to work out a way to get into the shelter that everyone is holed up in. The walkthrough guide below will start off with the heat problem and then talk you through a very quick solution to get to the capital of the Gerudo region and into the base of operations.

How to get through the sand storm

If you’ve made it to Kara Kara Bazaar then you will have come face to face with the sand storm that’s blocking the route to Gerudo Town in TotK. However, if you’ve come a different way then you might have discovered the sand storm without any context, so it’s definitely a good idea to start from the Bazaar.

To get to the location, head south west from Hyrule Field usiing the Skytower network and you should see a new tower to unlock as you make your way towards the map marker for the Gerudo Regional Phenomena. This is the Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower, but the heat of the desert will kick in around here, so you’ll need to cook up a heat resistant meal or elixir with some chillshroom to get through this.

After that you need to activate the tower, which you can do by bringing the technician up from below by fixing the elevator. Once you’ve done this you can get a good launch to get to Kara Kara Bazaar, which is where you can get the Desert Voe Headband to have more permanent heat resistance.

It’s in the desert just before the sand storm in a straight line between the Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower and the map marker for the Regional Phenomena. It looks like a desert oasis surrounding a pool with a few shops and Gerudo warriors around the place. There’s also a shrine not too far away if you want a fast travel point to use to get back here later.

When you buy the Headband, you also find out that you that the rest of the set is located in a secret shop in Gerudo Town. When you do get past the sand storm you can use the video below to get into the secret shop, which also has the Sand Boots and the Snow Boots, so it’s worth hunting down.

If you try to leave Kara Kara Bazaar through the sand storm you’ll find that you get pretty lost fast. If that isn’t enough, you’ll also have the added challenge of the Gibdos and the Molduga, so it can be pretty fraught.

As a result, getting to Gerudo Town on foot is just not a good idea. The problem is that you probably don’t have enough stamina to be able to glide all the way there from the Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower.

There are a couple of solutions to this, though. The best is to use a device to get you up and over the sand storm. A simple approach would be to use a Wing from one of the sky islands that you can get to from the tower.

However, you can also create a hover craft to fly over it using a block, four fans and a control panel device. If you’re not too sure about how to put it together you can see it in action in the video below.

Another possible solution to get past the sand storm is to cook up stamina boosting meals with Stamella Bulb or Stamshrooms. You can then use these to boost how far you can use the glider, which might be enough to make the hop from the tower to Gerudo Town.

There is a third method you can do, but it does mean being in the sand storm more directly. Essentially, run on into the shroud and look for updrafts. You can ride these to get height every now and again and you can chain them to make it all the way to Gerudo Town, but the flying plan is the one that we went for.

Once you have your flying solution in place, you can’t miss the town from the air, plus your map marker will work above the sand storm. There’s a shrine at the top of the palace, so aim for this and open it to get a fast travel point. You can then drop down to the palace and the details below will talk you through how to get into the hideout.

How to get into Gerudo Town

As with a number of the puzzles in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, how to get into Gerudo Town is a mystery with an easy solution once you know how. Head into the throne room and use Ultrahand to move the sand seal statue behind the throne.

This will reveal the entrance to the shelter that the townspeople have been using to hide out from the sand storm and Gibdos. It’s here that you’ll pick up the Riju of Gerudo Town quest to fix the shroud by lighting the three red pillars and completing the Lightning Temple.
