The Suicide Squad age rating and UK release date

The Suicide Squad film UK release date, age rating latest & parents guide

With cinemas back open again in 2021, it was time to rekindle our excitement for the big screen and one of a slew of blockbusters out over the was The Suicide Squad film. You can read details below for the UK age rating, release date, cast and synopsis, as well as our more detailed parents guide to give you everything you need to know about the film.

The movie follows on from the success of Birds of Prey, and picks up where things left off with the opening 2016 film, which saw the team being forced together to stare down the might of Enchantress (Cara Delevingne). This time, they’ve got a slightly different lineup with Will Smith out of the equation and both Idris Elba and John Cena joining the party. You can find out more about the cast in the section below.

The story synopsis this time around sees government agent Amanda Waller bringing together a new Task Force X team together to shut down an old Nazi prison and research facility. As you’d expect, things don’t quite go to plan and in addition to the dictatorial forces of the island, they also have a new mega-villain kaiju beast to take on in the form of Starro, an oversized starfish with mega-mind powers.

Cast

A few of the original Suicide Squad cast will be back in action with Margot Robbie playing Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney playing Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Colonel Rick Flag, and Viola Davis (The Help) starring as Amanda Waller. They’ll be joined by Elba as Bloodsport, Cena as Peacemaker, Sylvester Stallone as King Shark and Peter Capaldi as The Thinker. There’s also talk of Taika Waititi (Thor: Love & Thunder) taking on the role of Starro, so it’s going to be interesting to see how he manages to play the big pink beast.

The Suicide Squad film UK release date

The UK release date for the film has now been confirmed for Friday the 30th July 2021, having been delayed by the global pandemic. That puts it face-to-face with Disney’s The Jungle Cruise, which is out on the same weekend in the UK, so it’s going to be a close call for the box office crown. Reviews will have a big impact on things, but there’s clearly going to be an age differential between the two films, so there could well be space for them both to land well.

With cinemas only recently reopening in the UK, the public has been pretty starved for big screen action, so if anything it could be a double header weekend for a lot of people. The 2016 original did okay in terms of box office success, but it was far from being a big hitter, so we’ll be surprised if the 2021 sequel goes on to be on of the highest grossing films of the year.

With the early summer release, it then went on to come out on DVD, Blu-ray and digital in Autumn 2020. UK age rating and parents guide

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) officially announced the UK age rating for The Suicide Squad as 15 as we got closer to the release date. It’s the same as the first film and we were expecting the 2021 sequel to come out with a similar age recommendation from the look of the trailer. Surprisingly, the trailer itself got a rating of 12A, but the consistent onslaught of more graphic fight action in the film is probably the reason the BBFC took the film up to a 15 certificate.

Expect a whole lot of threat and a good chunk of violence, including seeing King Shark tearing people in half and devouring them whole. There wasn’t much in the way of sex or sexual references in the first film and the language wasn’t too colourful either, so really it’s going to be mostly the threat and violence to take into account for the sequel. The notes from the BBFC include strong bloody violence, gore, and brief drug misuse.

We’ll update you with more details on the film as they get confirmed. You can also check out our movie news section to keep tabs on the latest upcoming films, or visit the Warner Bros. website at https://www.warnerbros.co.uk/.

Runtime

The runtime has been announced as 120 minutes, so you’ll have a good two hours of crazy action to look forward to.
