What are candy and what can you do with them?

Candy is a resource in Pokémon Go that you collect by completing the activities below. For the most part, it is specific to each ‘mon in your Pokédex. This means that you have Eevee candy for Evees or Larvitar candy for Larvitar.

However, it doesn’t change as you evolve, so Vaporeon will still have Eevee candies and Tyranitar will still have Larvitar’s to collect. This will be the same throughout the entire evolution chain, so for example, you have Bulbasaur candy to collect for the starter, Ivysaur and Venusaur.

There are two ways to use candy in Pokémon Go and the first is to evolve. In your Pokémon page you’ll see the number of candies that you have next to your Stardust. You can also see a little further how many candies you need to go to the next evolution.

The second thing you can do with candy is to power up your Pokémon. Again, you can see how many you need to power up just above the evolution line. It’s worth bearing in mind that you’ll also need the required amount of Stardust to complete the evolution and in some cases there are other criteria like special items or time of day.

How to get candy from Pokémon

The most obvious way to get more candy in Pokémon Go is by catching more Pokémon. You usually get 3 candies for each catch, but you can boost this to 6 if you use a Pinap Berry, which you can get more of as rewards for completing research, spinning Pokéstops, in the Free Gift or by exchanging gifts with friends.

However, it’s also worth remembering that you also get a candy back for each Pokémon that you transfer to the professor. You can do this from the Pokémon screen – press on the menu button at the bottom right and choose Transfer to send them off, or select multiple from the list screen by pressing and holding until they’re highlighted.

You can also get more candy by taking out your buddy and walking around with them. If you haven’t chosen one yet, use the profile button at the bottom left of the screen and select which Pokémon you want to make a buddy.

You can have multiple and you can swap between them to get a candy for walking with one and then choose another to swap. If you’re going on a walk or run then it’s a good way to combine activities to get more candy for the buddy that you choose. You get one candy for each 5km walk you do with your buddy.

The magic of rare candy

That probably doesn’t give you that much in terms of being able to get more candy in Pokémon Go, but the good news is that there’s the rare candy system to tap into. The way this works is that you can exchange rare candies to convert them to any Pokémon you want to use them on.

This gives you a much higher volume of candy on a regular basis and means you’re not stuck waiting to spot the right ‘mon in the wild or to drag yourself on long walks to boost your tally. We’ll take you through the options to get more rare candy in the section below, but once you’ve got them, you’re going to need to know how to use them.

There are two was to make the conversion. You can either go into items, scroll down to rare candies, click on it and choose the Pokémon you want to give them to. You can then choose how many you want to convert and then once you’re done you’ll have candy for that Pokémon.

You can also do it from the Pokémon page when you choose to power up or evolve, but you get more control with the item approach. You probably won’t have a great deal of these to start with, but with the tips below you should be able to get a whole lot of these each and every day.

How to get rare candy

There are a number of ways to get more rare candy in Pokémon Go and the easiest is as rewards for research activities. You can check on these by clicking on the research button at the bottom right of the main map screen.

It doesn’t come up all of the time as a reward, but it’s definitely worth looking out for and working on them when you find them. Just make sure you claim your reward when you get them and you can use the process above to change them into specific Pokémon candies.

You can also get them as rewards for raids, but again this isn’t that often, so not one to rely on. However, if you’re looking to max out your rare candy tally each day the best approach is to try to get them as rewards for Go Battle League wins.

You can enter these by clicking on the Pokéball icon at the bottom middle of the main map view screen and selecting Battle. You’ll then see the Go Battle League options to enter battles and you’ll get rare candy drops for the question mark reward sometimes after 2 wiins, but there’s a guarantees 3 of them if you can win 4 battles out of the 5 you get.

You can also use Premium Battle Passes to enter the Premium Reward battles to add even more options. Bear in mind that the battles will get harder as you progress up the ranks, so you’ll need to develop your team and get better as you go, but this is a great way to get more candy in Pokémon Go.
