Spider Man 4 (2012)

Spiderman 4After the announcement back in January 2010 that Sony Pictures’ plans for Spider Man 4 had been cancelled, Spidy fans were left in a spin. This brought an end to the Raimi, McGuire, Dunst franchise. However, the upside is that the series has undergone a complete reboot for its release in 2012 and that Toby McGuire, along with the rest of the cast of the first 3 films, were out.

Its release date was the 3rd July 2012, and it was developed with 3D production. Spiderman 4 (The Amazing Spiderman) focuses on Peter Parker becoming Spidy in high school. Maybe the success of the horror show that is Glee and the amazing Kick Ass had some influence on this decision.

The script was written by James Vanderbilt, and Marc Webb ((500) Days of Summer) was sat in the director’s chair for the development of the movie.

The big news was that Andrew Garfield (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus) would be filling McGuire’s red boots alongside a whole new supporting cast. However, the fact that he was 27 at the time of filming was contentious taking into account the whole high school storyline. His partial double chin and slight crows feet weren’t going to help, however, the images of Garfield in his Spider-Man suit took away the perception that he might be too old for the role.

It was also released that the film features Rhys Ifans (Greenburg) as Doctor Kurt Conners, a.k.a The Lizard, as well as rumours about the Proto-Goblin, played by Irrfan Khan.

There was a lot of speculation that the Spiderman 4 reboot would have a Batman Begins-like dark side with influences from Marvel’s Ultimate Spiderman series giving it much more serious overtones for the series going forward.

  1. I think it was more of a Spider-Man 3 was a disaster and the previous series couldn’t make money from it so let’s erase every trace of it and start a new one so we can make money from it again. That’s the main reason why I’m very much annoyed by the existence of this film. This film exists to solely be a franchise. As talented as some of the people involved are it’s gonna take a lot to convince me that this film won’t be terrible. It’s the same reason why I’m getting more and more angry at the Green Lantern film. It’s primary purpose seems to be make loads of cash.
