Introduction and story

Gunn’s transfer to head up DC Studies with Peter Safran, and the fact that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is going to be the last film in the series as we know it is going to make the film pretty important to fans. We’ve all loved saying “I am Groot” and watching the crazy escapades of the Guardians on the big screen, so it’s going to be a little sad to say goodbye to them.

However, we’re pretty sure that at least some of them are going to feature in future Marvel Cinematic Universe movies like Avengers The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars. Which of them that will be remains to be seen, but there should be a little left in the tank before Phase 6 closes out the Multiverse Saga.

The story sees them heading to Counter-Earth where the High Evolutionary has been tinkering with genetic modifications for a long time. He’s the creator of Rocket and if you remember the times the space racoon talked about his past it always sounds traumatic, so it’s clearly not a great father son relationship.

They’ve also got the might of Adam Warlock to face, who has been artificially designed to end the Guardians of the Galaxy on the orders of the High Priestess, Ayesha. It was teased at the end of Vol 2 and it looks like it’s going to be a big part of the final chapter in the trilogy.

With all of this in mind, it’s clearly going to be a DVD, Blu-ray, 4K and digital release, especially if you’re already a fan of the series. It’s also going to be yet another big barometer reading on what to expect from James Gunn with his time at DC Studios and the prospect of Superman Legacy as his first film in the new DC Universe.

UK Blu-ray, digital and DVD release date latest

With the release date set for May 6th, 2023, the Guardians of the Galaxy UK Blu-ray and DVD release date should take place around September 2023. This should give it a long run in cinemas leading up to summer and a timeline to release on digital in the very least before the end of the holidays.

A lot of the timing will come down to how successful the film is at the box office, with bigger films getting a much longer gap between cinema and home entertainment. We’ve seen with Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania that where films don’t do as well as expected we get to see them on DVD, Blu-ray and digital a little quicker.

However, if you look at films like Avatar 2, which is the biggest film since Avengers End Game, they get longer runs and bigger gaps. The fact that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is picking up more positive reviews is a good indicator that it will be more successful than Ant-Man 3, so might get a longer gap for DVD, Blu-ray and digital release.

As Marvel is owned by the Walt Disney Company, it will also feature on Disney Plus at some time later in the year. However, your first chance to see it at home is probably early access to buy the film, which should be around 45-60 days after it comes out on the big screen, so around July just in time for the summer hols.

North America release date latest

Things move a little faster in the US, so if you’re based in North America you might get to see it on DVD, Blu-ray and standard digital before the end of August. You can read more about the guardians of the Galaxy 3 rent online release date if you’re waiting for the least expensive home media option.

The film should get early access in North America a little earlier than in the UK too with the possibility of it arriving towards the end of June, but we’ll update you with more details as they’re confirmed. It’s been a very changeable few years for the film industry, so predictions have been harder than usual for DVD, Blu-ray and 4K releases.

As usual, if you want the bonus content with your purchase then the Blu-ray or 4K versions are your best bet and it’s a similar story with definition and image quality. Although, it’s worth bearing in mind that digital has definitely upped its game in terms of special features and you can find out more about what this might look like for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 in the section below.

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 extras and special features

The official details for the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 bonus extras and special features are a long way away from being confirmed, but we can look at other recent Marvel releases to get a good idea about what to expect. The last film from the MCU was Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania, which gave us over 2 hours of extras with the digital, Blu-ray and 4K release.

This included a feature on the characters and their story to-date, audio commentary, gag reel and deleted scenes. There’s also a feature about the villains of the film and with High Evolutionary, Ayisha and the might of Adam Warlock to cover it would work well for Starlord and team’s big trek to Counter Earth.

DVDs don’t get the special features, so as mentioned above you’ll need to stump up for the Blu-ray, 4K or digital options for Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Although, they should be included with the film on Disney Plus if you’ve got a subscription and you can check out the links at the bottom of the page to find out more about when it’s likely to stream.
