The Banshees of Inisherin UK release date, age rating certificate and more

If you’re looking for some dark comedy to add to your movie mix then you’ll be interested in The Banshees of Inisherin UK release date won’t you now (full details below). It reunites director Martin McDonagh with actors Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell, following their work on In Bruges, so we’ll also include the details on the age rating certificate, along with the story, cast and runtime.

Since In Bruges, McDonagh and Farrell have also teamed up on yet another dark comedy, Seven Psychopaths, so this will be their third collaboration. Gleeson starred in The Guard back in 2011, which was directed by Martin McDonagh’s brother John, so the connections are pretty strong between the three.

Story

Set in on an island off the coast of Ireland, The Banshees of Inisherin is about two friends, Colm and Pádraic, who suddenly find themselves in dark waters when Colm decides that he doesn’t want anything to do with his former BFF. He takes things pretty extremely with a total ban on talking to him with the threat of cutting off his own fingers as his leverage.

However, you can see in the trailer that there might be more to things than meets the eye. Pádraic’s dullness and penchant for chatting at length about his pony’s excrement doesn’t appear to be the sum of all parts, so it’s there’s an element of mystery to the story.

Cast

In addition to Brendan Gleeson (Assassin’s Creed movie) starring as Colm and Colin Farrell (The Batman) playing unwanted pal Pádraic, The Banshees of Inisherin cast also includes Barry Keogh (Eternals). Kerry Condon plays Pádraic’s wife Siobhán, who you might recognise as either the voice of F.R.I.D.A.Y. from Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Homecoming, or Mike’s daughter-in-law from Better Call Saul.

The Banshees of Inisherin UK release date

Cinemas were initially being a bit weird about when film was going to come out, but The Banshees of Inisherin UK release date went on to be Friday the 21st October 2022. It was probably due to a little uncertainty around the winter months in light of the last couple of years, but thankfully that doesn’t appear to have affected the Martin McDonagh’s film too much.

It was out on the same date in North America, but it had its premier at the Venice Film Festival in early September 2022. As a result, there’s a lot of story details to avoid online, so you might want to tread carefully if you don’t want the ending ruined for you.

It picked up a lot of good reviews following its screening at Venice, so this is yet another big film to add to the watch list. However, it had big competition at the box office with Black Adam out on the same date.

The films are obviously very different, so there should be room for them both, but with Colin Farrell in the mix there’s at least an element of crossover between the potential audiences. He’s done a number of action/superhero films with the likes of the Total Recall remake and The Batman, so there’s at least a little conflict for cinema-goers.

It has since been released to stream on Disney+ on the 21st December 2022, so it’s a good on for anyone looking for a little pre-Christmas anti-cheer.

Following The Banshees of Inisherin coming out on the big screen in the last week of October, it left a lot of questions about its DVD, Blu-ray and digital release date. There might be just enough time to get the home entertainment in time for the holidays, but that will depend on the success at the box office. February 2023 is probably the best bet, but we’ll add in more details as they become available.

Age rating

The Banshees of Inisherin UK age rating has now been confirmed by the British Board of Film Classification with the release date in the bag and it’s picked up a 15 certificate. It was rated R in North America following its arrival at Venice, which was a pretty big indicator for the British rating.

The trailer has a 15 age notifier on it, and this went on to be the case for the film too based on the R rating in the States. It was possible that it could creep up to an 18, but it looks like the comedy didn’t get too wildly dark in the final third, so it stayed as a 15.

The details around the R rating in the US include language throughout the film, so you can compare this to In Bruges for good measure. There’s also an element of violence and graphic nudity to take into account.

Runtime

The premier at the Venice Film Festival has also confirmed The Banshees of Inisherin runtime to be 1 hour 54 minutes, which is relatively short in the modern day movie industry. In Bruges was only 1 hour and 47 minutes and Seven Psychopaths clocked in at 1 hour and 50 minutes long, so it continues the tighter approach to film making by Martin McDonagh.

Trailer

For us, the most interesting aspect of the trailer is the hidden mystery that seems to be at play behind it all. There’s just got to be something more to the falling out than donkeys and chat.

Music seems to be incredibly important to Colm and he mentions legacy concepts, so maybe that’s the key. Either way, it’s going to be good to see the trio back in action again.
