Women, Power and Politics season to start it’s Tricycle Theatre campaign

The Women, Power and Politics season will soon begin at the Tricycle Theatre, bringing a series of plays to Kilburn, London institution. Tracing the history of important women in power & politics, the series will deliver plays on the likes of Elizabeth I, the suffragettes and the battleaxe herself, Baroness Margaret Thatcher at the height of her power.

Beginning on the 4th June 2010 and running through to the 17th July, the series starts out with two batches of four plays entitled Then and Now. It doesn’t take Lex Luther like evil cunning to work out that the Then plays look back at the more distant past and the Now plays have more of a contemporary feel.

Then starts out with The Lioness by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, which tells the story of Elizabeth I and her encounters with John Knox and Robert Devereux, the 2nd Earl of Essex. This is followed by tales of suffragettes in Northern Ireland, imagined conflabs between Maggie Thatcher and the Queen and finally the anti-nuclear protests at Greenham Common in the 1980s.

Now begins with a look at Margaret Becket’s Clare Short aided Labour party leader in Joy Wilkinson’s Acting Leader. There are also plays about student presidency elections, self-made millionaires and political canvassing in sunny Leicester.
