Colossal UK release date, trailer, cast and film details

Colossal filmGet set for a monster movie like no other in Spanish filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo’s comedy take on the well-established genre in Colossal, out next month in the UK. It stars Anne Hathaway in the lead role as she wakes up to find out that a giant monster is wreaking havoc in a city on the other side of the world, but when she discovers that it’s somehow linked to her things get pretty freaky. Check it out for yourself in the trailer below.

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2016, so it’s already had time to pick up a fair few reviews along the way. The good news is that they’re mostly favourable, averaging around the 3.5 to 4 star mark across the board with a lot of praise for the unique comedy slant the film has taken to the concept of monster movies.

Release date

The Colossal UK release date has been confirmed for Friday the 19th May, so it’ll be out in a few weeks. It arrived on the big screen in the US on the 7th April 2017, which has added to the decent reviews its had.

The big film coming out on the same weekend in the UK is Guy Ritchie’s medieval action adventure flick, King Arthur: The Legend Of The Sword, so it will have a fight on its hands. It’ll also be up against another comedy with silly Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn mother daughter debacle, Snatched, getting a release too.

Story

Gloria (Hathaway) is in the throws of a breakdown as her life has begun to unravel with her boyfriend kicking her out and not having a job for the last year. She heads back to the comfort of her hometown, but after a heavy night in a bar with old friends she wakes up to find out that a huge monster in marauding through the streets of Seoul, having gone on a destructive rampage for the last nine hours while she’s been asleep.

Things get even crazier when one of her friends points out the weird way the colossus monster never looks down, like it being controlled remotely. Gloria takes this to the not so obvious next level when she realises that it’s her controlling it, making it dance scratch its head and some other cute stuff after it’s already decimated the majority of the South Korean capital.

Cast

Anne Hathaway (Alice Through The Looking Glass) takes on the unconventional role of Gloria / the rampaging monster and she’s joined in the cast by Jason Sudeikis (Epic) as her childhood friend. Dan Stevens (Beauty And The Beast (2017)), Austin Stowell (Battle Of The Sexes) and Blake Nelson (Fantastic Four) complete the Colossal cast.

Age rating

Colossal has been given an age rating of 15 in the UK by the British Board Of Film Classification (BBFC) with strong language.

eProduction

The film has been directed by the brilliantly named Nacho Vigalondo. It’s been produced by Voltage Pictures with Nahikari Ipina, Nicolas Chartier, Zev Foreman, Dominic Rustam, Russell Levine, Shawn Williamson and Arielle Boisvert credited as producers. Vigalondo, Jonathan Deckter, Justin Bursch, Garrett Basch, Chris Lytton, Lee Jea Woo and Choi Pyung Ho are the executive producers.

First impressions

With positive reviews in the bag, some good comedy in the trailer and a very unique and interesting story that leaves you wanting to know how it’s all going to get wrapped up, Colossal looks like it could be one to watch. It’s possibly even a sleeper classic in the making with a very likeable cast and set of characters, along with some impressive CGI to live up to the expectations of monster movie fans.
