Eternals film what is Dane Whitman's sword, who is Eros and more questions

With the recent arrival of Eternals on the big screen, you might have a few questions about what went on, like what is Dane Whitman’s (Kit Harrington) white sword or who is Eros in the mid and post-credits scenes. Here are all of the answers you need, along with a few others you might not have thought of to help you make sense of everything that happened in the mammoth 2 hours and 37 minutes of the film.

It was always going to be a challenge cramming everything into the film, which means that there are inevitably a few loose ends. The reality is that they’re mostly intentional as Marvel is simply teasing a sequel to the film in the not too distant future.

However, that doesn’t do much for the curious of you out there that just want to know what’s going on straight away. If that’s not you now’s your only chance to back out, but for everyone else, read on and we’ll try to bring you up to speed on that sword, the arrival of Eros, what the deal was with Ikaris and his flip-flop enemy friend thing and the sad demise of both Ajak (Salma Hayek) and Gilgamesh (Don Lee).

Just what is Dane Whitman’s sword?

The reality is that there’s a lot more to Dane Whitman than meets the eye. For the most part, he’s portrayed as Cersi’s new boyfriend and colleague at the Natural History Museum in London. However, in the end-credits scene you can see him getting a white sword from an unknown person who asks him whether or not he’s ready for it.

The sword is actually the Ebony Blade, which was forged by Merlin out of meteorite rock. It has been passed down over the years from its original wielder, Sir Percy of Scandia, who Merlin made the sword for. Dane is his distant blood relative and the moment in the end-credits scene is him getting the sword and taking on its responsibility.

We’d initially expected this to fully come to pass in Eternals, but clearly that was just too much story to tell already without throwing in a mystical white sword. The sword conveys upon its bearer both its powers and its curse, turning them into the Black Knight, which is what Whitman is clearly going to be in the sequel.

The sword is indestructible, can cut through practically anything except for other powerful items like vibranium or Thor’s hammer, can be used to absorb or parry energy and has its own power blast. It also gives the Black Knight immortality, along with a cool impervious black armor that makes them light enough to fly.

On the down side, the ruddy thing is cursed, so Dane Whitman should start to turn to stone as soon as he takes up the sword. That sounds like it won’t work too well as a film, Kit Harrington as a stone statue for 2 and a half hours, so it’s going to be interesting to see how Kevin Fiege adapts this for the big screen.

Who is Eros?

Eros, or Starfox, who is portrayed by Harry Style in the Eternals mid-credits scene, is also an Eternal, but he was born on Titan and is the brother of the now dead mad-Titan, Thanos. It’s a slightly strange setup, but hey, you’ve seen the film, comic books are pretty far out.

Anyways, it looks like he’s come to earth to join the remaining E team, so he’s bound to be a big part of the sequel, along with Dane Whitman and his Black Knight thing. If you’re wondering what his powers are, essentially he can control peoples’ emotions, which seems a bit duplicitous when you think about it, but hey, he’s one of the good guys, so we should probably just overlook it until we see him in action properly.

More questions from the Eternals film

Q. What happened to Gilgamesh?

A. Kro done him up like a kipper.

Q. Same question, but for Ajak?

A. This time it was Ikaris that done it. He killed her because she told him about the emergence and her concerns for humanity. He decided to keep his allegiance with the Celestials.

Q. Who plays Kro?

A. Bill Skarsgård

Q. Why does Sprite side with Ikaris?

A. She loves him, but it unrequited.

Q. Why is Starfox called Eros?

A. Eros is his Titan name. Starfox is his superhero name, so we’re expecting him to go through something of a crisis of identity in Eternals 2.

Q. Was Kro the last Deviant?

A. It looks like it for the Earth contingent, but the Celestials sowed there seed far and wide, so there’s bound to be more out there. In fact, we’ll be surprised if we don’t see more of Kro as well.

Q. Will the Eternals help the Avengers now?

A. It’s a good bet. The ones that stay are clearly keen to do anything to help humanity now and they’ll need to face off against the Celestial judgement, so they’re going to need some help. It kind of makes sense for the next film to be an Avengers film featuring this story arc.

Q. Is Dane Whitman going to be bad now he’s got the Ebony Blade?

A. Sort of not, but it could go either way.
