God of War Ragnarok how to beat Heimdall

God of War Ragnarok how to beat Heimdall

Sadly, in the world of God of War Ragnarok Heimdall is a complete tool, so here’s how to beat the git when he catches up with Kratos. It’s one of the mid-to-late boss fights in the game and it’s easy to get stuck after you take out his mount, Gulltopr.

However, with the tips below you should be able to beat him even if you’re playing on Give Me God of War (GMGOW). Obviously, your timing will need to be a whole lot more perfect than in the easier difficulty settings, but at least you’ll be making a dent.

The opening phase of the fight where Heimdall is sat on Gulltoppr is relatively easy in comparison to the latter section. However, you can see how to beat the Battlecat wannabe in the section below before we get on to the tougher nut that is Heimdall himself after Kratos has finished off his feline mount.

How to beat Heimdall on Gulltoppr?

A lot of this is simply dodging its unblockable charge and then returning fire. Obviously, build up the stun meter for a chance to wail on it and cycle through your runic attacks to dish out the pain.

There’s a chance to counter attack when you see the circle indicator on the screen, but if you keep moving and get in the damage you should be fine. You can use ranged attacks with either the Leviathan Axe, Blades of Chaos or Spear when Heimdall and Gulltoppr are far away, but this will only add a little damage to help you beat the first phase of the boss fight.

How to beat Heindall on his own?

Here’s where things get a whole lot more complicated, because without Gulltoppr Heimdall has got way more skills. He’s super fast, so he seems impossible to hit with any of your attacks, but the good news is that there is a way to defeat him.

He can dodge melee combos with any weapon and either catches or dodges your ranged attacks. If that isn’t enough he seems to be able to hit Kratos whenever he wants to, so it can feel pretty soul destroying, especially if you’re playing on Give Me God of War difficulty.

The main point to focus on is his stun bar, which appears a little differently than in other boss fights at this stage. To get this to go up you need to fire spears at his feet and detonate them when he’s close to them. You can also detonate spears that he’s caught to add to this.

It isn’t easy, because Heimdall is lightning fast, as well as being the smuggest floating pile of Gulltoppr waste in the history of Norse mythology. However, if you keep up the pressure and try to anticipate where he’s going to be to place your spears you should catch him enough.

Dodge, get into position, throw down a spear in his path and detonate when he’s next to it. This will systematically increase his stun bar and when it gets to max you’ll get your R3 attack opportunity.

The bad news, though, is that the first time you get this Heimdall still dodges all of your attacks, but he does say that you were close. You’ll need to repeat this process before Kratos actually hits him and it’s a full strike that draws blood, so things get much easier from this point onward.

You should be able to do standard combos on him by this stage, so it’s back to dodging, countering and cycling through your weapons’ runic attacks. Every now and again he gets an impenetrable shield, but you can break through this with any attacks, which deplete the shield bar.

Cycle, rinse, repeat and you’ve got everything you need to know how to beat Heimdall in God of War Ragnarok. It makes for a satisfying victory, because he’s been pushing his luck since he first appeared. Check out the video below to see the whole Heimdall boss fight:
