Sigourney Weaver’s most recent film, Avatar The Way of Water, kicks off our list of her top 10 best movies with her performance as Kiri, the 15-year-old daughter of Jake and Neytiri. Not only is the film on track to become one of the best-performing films ever make, but at 73 it’s a pretty impressive performance.

#9. Galaxy Quest

Sci-fi and Sigourney Weaver are pretty synonymous and in 1999 it was time for a turn in the genre parody, Galaxy Quest. It’s a great comedy with some big-name co-stars like Tim Allen, Allen Rickman and Sam Rockwell, along with debut film roles for Justin Long and Rainn Wilson.

#8 Avatar

Weaver’s first role in the world of Avatar was as Dr. Grace Augustine in the 2009 film. It’s still the best-selling movie of all time, so it’s impossible to leave it off the list. It’s also a much-loved franchise with fans all over the world, and it led on to her role change for Avatar 2.

#7 Alien 3

While it didn’t land as well as her other Alien films as Ellen Ripley, it’s still a huge movie that’s well worth a watch. Not having either Ridley Scott or James Cameron in the director’s chair took its toll, but Sigourney Weaver’s performance is as faultless as ever.

#6 Working Girl

Working Girl is a classic rom-com drama and this time Weaver plays the baddy boss, Katherine Parker. It’s another of her best roles and it goes perfectly alongside Harrison Ford and Melanie Griffith.

#5 Gorillas In The Mist

The two films in the middle of our list of best movies made history for Sigourney Weaver as she won two acting Golden Globe Awards in the same year. She picked up the Best Actress in a Motion Picture for Gorillas In The Mist and Best Supporting Actress for Working Girl. The nature biopic saw her playing naturalist Dian Fossey as she strives to protect Mountain Gorillas in Rwanda.

Weaver is still the honorary chairman of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, so it’s a role she took pretty seriously.

#4 Ghostbusters 2

Ghostbusters 2 is one of our all-time favourite films and the fact that it only makes the number 4 spot in our top ten is a testament to the impact of Sigourney on the film industry. It sees the star returning to the role of Dana Barrett as she tries to keep her son from becoming the reincarnation vessel of the film’s villain, Vigo The Carpathian.

#3 Alien

The 1979 sci-fi horror flick that started it all. Officially, it’s the best movie in the Alien series, but we just like the sequel a little bit more in terms of re-watch value. Sigourney Weaver is perfect throughout as the tension and builds with the onslaught of the seemingly unstoppable xenomorth on the warpath.

It has one of the most atmospheric sets in sci-fi history and the ending is an excellent setup for 2. It has inspired some great games too, like Alien Isolation, if you’re looking to take things to the next level.

#2 Aliens

How do you beat the greatest sci-fi horror movie of all time? Throw in more aliens! While that might sound like a crude solution, the end result was just as tense and thrilling as its predecessor.

The trackers are a great addition to heighten the tension and it brings in a whole lot more action with James Cameron writing and directing. Weaver is brilliant and the finale against the queen with the massive lifter exoskeleton suit is easily one of the most iconic sci-fi endings that you’ll ever watch.

#1 Ghostbusters

What’s not to love about Ghostbusters. The action, the cast, the spooks, the special effects, the comedy, it’s all best-in-class across the board. It’s got more re-watch value than any other movie and the transformation of Weaver’s Dana Barrett into Zuul the Gatekeeper is very cool.

More of Sigourney Weaver’s best films

With the top 10 done and dusted, here are a few honorary mentions from the rest of Sigourney Weaver’s back catalogue. They didn’t make the full list of best movies because they’re either lower impact or really small parts, but they’re definitely worth checking out.

  • Dave – playing the First Lady to a fake president alongside Kevin Kline as the imposter makes for a fun political comedy. It was also another chance for Weaver to work alongside Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman.
  • Heartbreakers – this is a left-field rom-con that sees Sigourney Weaver playing con artist mum alongside Jennifer Love Hewitt. Gene Hackman, Ray Liotta, Jason Lee and Anne Bancroft are also in the mix and it’s a good fun watch.
  • The Village – M. Night Shyamalan didn’t win many plaudits for this one, but it’s getting an honorary mention because it’s such an unusual role for the actress. It an early film for Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World Dominion) and Joaquin Phoenix (Joker), as they all live in an old world village where they’re scared of the other people that live beyond the woods.
  • Finding Dory – this is one of the most random cameos in cinema with Sigourney Weaver being the voice behind the Marine Life Institute where Dory aims to find her parents. It’s pretty funny, and the rest of the film is great too, so well worth a mention under our list of best movies for the star.
  • Ghostbusters Afterlife – this was a mid-credits cameo, but it did hint at bigger things to come for the franchise, it’s definitely worth a mention. The film is a credible return for the series, so if you haven’t seen it yet, it’s one for your list.
