There have been highs and lows along the way, both in terms of the story for the characters and the critical response to the film. The original trilogy set everything in motion with Star Wars, which had a release in May 1977, picking up both critical acclaim and the most dedicated group of fans in cinema history. It was followed by The Empire Strikes Back in 1980 and The Return Of The Jedi in 1983 with both taking their place in the holy grail of sci-fi cinema.

The prequel trilogy didn’t garner the same universal critical response, despite being a trio of box office smashes, and telling the story of Anekin Skywalker’s fall to the Dark Side of the Force. Reviews picked up, though, with the release of Star Wars The Force Awakens, which introduced us to the new characters that would help close the Skywalker saga, and they continued with The Last Jedi, which set things up for the final showdown.

The same cast members will be back in The Rise Of Skywalker with Daisy Ridley continuing her complicated battle with Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and the First Order. She’ll have the help of Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), Finn (John Boyega), Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong’o), and Rose (Kelly Marie Tran), along with the rest of the Resistance, Chewie, R2-D2, C-3PO, and Leia, who continues the legacy despite Carrie Fisher’s death in 2016.

The film will also bring back Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker who became one with the Force at the end of The Last Jedi, along with Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian and the sheer presence of Ian McDiarmid as the Emperor.

Star Wars The Rise Of Skywalker release date UK

The Star Wars The Rise Of Skywalker UK release date of has been confirmed for Thursday the 19th December 2019, putting it squarely on a lot of Christmas to-do lists. It’s out a day later in the USA and Canada, so anyone catching it on day one in the UK will get to see it earlier than any stateside cousins.

It’s coming out on the same week as the Cats film, but in all fairness it could well be up against a film of a real life alien first contact and it would still take the box office #1 spot.

Age rating and parents guide

The official Star Wars The Rise Of Skywalker age rating for the UK has been confirmed as 12A by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) with the release date in December. Both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi picked up 12 certifications, so all three films have landed in the same ball park with moderate violence and threat.

The original trilogy had a much lighter parents guide with U certifications across the board, but the sequel trilogy has cranked things up a notch in terms of violence, which is the main reason that they’ve been given the 12 age ratings in the UK.

Runtime

The runtime is 2 hours 22 minutes, which is little shorter than The Last Jedi, which clocked in at two and a half hours long. If you compare these back to The Return Of The Jedi, the new films are a whole lot longer with around a whole hour less time needed for the classic original trilogy finale.

There are a lot of loose end to tie up in the latest closer, so it’s surprising that it didn’t take more time to build things out. Check out our Star Wars The Rise Of Skywalker explained to read more about all the threads that the upcoming film release needs to bring together.

Story synopsis

The film takes place a year after the events of The Last Jedi as what remains of the resistance is poised to strike back once again against the galactic might of the First Order. Led by Kylo Ren, the self-appointed Supreme Leader of the Order following his assassination of Snoke in Episode VIII, there’s inner conflict on both sides of The Force. It’s all about to come to its conclusion to bring an end to the Skywalker saga once and for all.
