The Pyramid (2014) movie DVD release date and trailer

The Pyramid (2014) movieIt’s surprising that modern horror hasn’t turned to the dark mysteries of ancient Egypt before now, but that’s exactly what’s happened with the release of The Pyramid (2014). If you go back through the history of horror you’ll find curses and mummies right at the very beginning, but in recent years, the closest we’ve gotten to it is in the swashbuckling adventures of Brendan Fraser in The Mummy series of films or comedy might of the likes of Night At The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb.

Release date

The movie had a US and UK release date on the 5th December 2014, and with a cool amateur recording style to it there were a fair few scares when it hit the big screen at the height of the holiday season, giving us all something very different to watch other than the big budget action and cartoon releases we ordinarily get. From the look of the trailer below, The Pyramid is a million miles away from that kind of glossy cinematic finish, as it’s probably best described as a cross between the original 1932 The Mummy movie, The Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield.

If you missed the movie at the cinemas, it’s being released on DVD and digital download on the 13th April 2015, so you won’t need to wait until Halloween to get your scare on this year.

Storyline

The story is a pretty simple one at its dark heart. When a new pyramid is discovered in the desert in Egypt, the team behind the project begin to excavate the site, exposing an entrance to the long lost antiquity. When they head inside to investigate, they become trapped, getting lost in the murky confines of its vast catacombs, and soon find that they’ve taken on more than they’d bargained for as something sinister hunts them down.

Check out the trailer below to get a feel for the fright fest you should expect from The Pyramid and keep an eye out for the brilliantly fleeting glimpses of whatever it is that’s tracking them down in the confines of the pyramid. It’s hard to say for sure if it’s a mummy or not, but whatever it is it isn’t entirely human and far from just stumbling away in the shadows it will be attacking with the kind of ferocious speed we’re more used to seeing in modern day horror movie like World War Z.

Cast

The cast is a pretty fresh faced combination that includes newcomers Ashley Hinshaw, Christa Nicola and Daniel Amerman, along with The Inbetweeners 2 star James Buckley, as the young archeological team that get trapped inside the pyramid. They’re added to with a little more acting experience from Denis O’Hare, who you might recognise as Russell Edgington, the 2,800 year old vampire king of Mississippi in HBO’s True Blood.

It’s interesting to see Buckley trying his hand at more serious roles, following on from 2013’s The Necessary Death Of Charlie Countryman. It’s not easy breaking away from the breakout success of The Inbetweeners, but it’s impressive to see him pushing to broaden his acting range.

Production

The Pyramid has been directed by Grégory Levasseur, who’s previous movies include The Hills Have Eyes, in which family is attacked by a pack of crazed mutants out in the wilds of New Mexico, so the movie has got a fair bit of horror experience behind it.

First impressions

If we’re brutally honest, this may not be a movie that’s going to draw in a big crowd at the cinema, despite the addition of James Buckley to the cast. However, it might go on to pick up a lot more views when it’s released on DVD and digital download in April 2015.
